Ash Ketchum is a trainer that fans have seen grow for the past decade in the Pokémon anime. He starts off his adventure very clumsily, sleeping in and even finding it difficult to control his Pokémon at times. With little knowledge of type match ups and a strange willingness to release even his strongest Pokémon, Ash has made most of his battles harder to win.
In Pokémon: Indigo League, the Gym Leaders often take pity on him or he gets incredibly lucky. In the games, Ash would not have this kind of luxury. He would have to win his battles fair and square, which would be more difficult to do since his bag has much less space than Red’s, and he doesn’t really use potions in battle.

In Pokémon Red, Yellow and Blue, Brock is the very first Gym Leader that the trainer encounters. Depending on the starter the player chooses, this battle can either be extremely difficult or very easy. For Ash, this battle would be downright impossible. With his partner Pokémon, Pikachu, and his Flying-type Pigeotto, he is off to a rough start in his Pokémon journey. In Pokémon: Indigo League, Ash is able to pull off a win by setting off the sprinkler system, but in the games, he would get crushed.
9 Gary Oak/Blue Won’t Give Ash A Chance To Rest Or Heal His Pokémon
Blue, often referred to as Gary Oak thanks to the anime, has a knack of showing up at the worst times. Unlike rivals in recent games, there’s no getting out of a battle with him, making him notorious for being one of the most difficult rivals in the games.
After the player finishes fighting the Elite Four without having any opportunities to go to a Pokémon Center, Blue is waiting at the very end with a tough lineup of Pokémon.
8 Red Would Destroy Ash’s Unevolved Pokémon With His Fully-Evolved Ones
Even more famous than Blue, Red is known to be one of the most powerful opponents that a trainer can fight at the end of the second generation of Pokémon games. He opens the battle by sending out his level 81 Pikachu, who is still tough despite being his weakest Pokémon. Unlike Ash, who didn’t prioritize evolution, Red took the time to fully evolve all three of his Kanto starters. Red is the Kanto Pokémon Champion, and it’s a well-earned title.
7 Whitney Would Flatten Ash’s Team With Her Miltank’s Rollout
Similarly to the anime, her Miltank’s Rollout is the most terrifying move in Pokemon Silver and Gold. Although her Clefairy may not be very strong, once her Miltank starts to stack Rollouts, she can burn through a trainer’s entire team. Unlike in the anime, Whitney would not give Ash the courtesy of using three Pokémon at once against her Miltank. Unless Ash got lucky enough to paralyze the Miltank, his team would get flattened.
6 Cynthia Has A Terrifying Team Led By A Garchomp Who’d Crush Ash
Cynthia, the champion of the Sinnoh region, has a powerful lineup of Pokémon who are all fully evolved. Players regard the battle against her to be one of the most difficult battles they have ever experienced, largely due to the massive power of her Garchomp. Similarly to the final battle with Champion Blue, Ash would be incredibly weak after facing the members of the Elite Four, and like all of the other trainers, Cynthia wouldn’t take it easy on him.
5 Articuno Would Be A Tough Opponent Waiting At The End Of A Rough Journey In Mystery Dungeon
In Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Red Rescue Team, the two protagonists are on the run from many teams who are pursuing them. They have to scale Mt. Freeze, an icy dungeon that is overwhelmingly cold. It contains 20 floors, all of which contain enemy Pokémon that pursue and attack the players relentlessly. If this wasn’t difficult enough, Articuno is found at the very top. Even with a full team of Pokémon, these circumstances would make it tough for Ash to win.
4 Grand Master Greevil Would Utterly Destroy Ash With His Shadow Lugia & Legendary Birds
In Pokémon XD: Gale Of Darkness, the trainer has to spot and catch Shadow Pokémon who are being used for nefarious purposes. In the final battle against Greevil, the trainer is expected to be able to catch every Pokémon that he sends out.
He starts off by summoning a Shadow Lugia, and follows it up with the three legendary birds. Ash’s Pokémon weren’t able to even tickle the legendary birds in Pokémon 2000, so he wouldn’t stand a chance.
3 Roxanne Has Rock-Types That Resist The Limited Attacks Of Ash’s Pokémon
In Pokémon Emerald, Roxanne is a gym leader who specializes in Rock-types. Ash was able to catch a Treecko at this point in the anime, but it only knew Pound and Quick Attack, Normal-type moves that are hardly helpful. Pikachu is an even worse matchup, as it is an Electric-type Pokémon. Pitting these two against two Geodudes and a Nosepass would not end well for Ash until he properly teaches his Treecko some Grass-type moves.
2 Kecleon Will Call Its Friends To Outnumber Ash
Kecleon is another powerful foe in Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Red Rescue Team, if you make an enemy out of him. All the player has to do is steal an item from the Kecleon’s shop in any dungeon, and this will trigger Kecleon to call for a massive hoard of other Kecleon to punish the thief. Realistically, the best way out of this situation is to head for the nearest flight of stairs, but even the most powerful Pokémon would not be able to withstand this assault.
1 Evice Possesses A Powerful Team In Pokémon Colosseum That Would Overwhelm Ash
The leader of the evil organization, Cipher, in Pokémon Colosseum, Evice battles the trainer after revealing his true identity. He boasts some incredibly powerful Pokémon, such as Salamence, Slaking, Machamp, and a Shadow Tyranitar, his most powerful Pokémon. Although Nascour, his minion, played the role of being Cipher’s boss convincingly by giving the player a tough battle, Evice is definitely stronger.
