Every main series Pokémon game has its own special little gimmick. Some were so well-loved that they became staple features such as being able to customize the player’s character or being able to directly interact with Pokémon to raise their affection.

However, there have been some amazing features that, despite having been good, enjoyable inclusions, had a limited return if they returned at all. There are plenty of things that fans hope are going to return to the games, especially with new installments seemingly right around the corner all the time.

10 An Underground Like The One In Sinnoh

Hopefully with the new Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl coming out soon, the inclusion of the underground will make a return. They had some really cool minigames down there where the player could dig up evolutionary stones, fossils, and other minerals. Additionally, it gave a way to bring in the concept of secret bases over from the Hoenn games, as well as a fun multiplayer interactive space with a capture the flag game.

It was a fun little area that didn’t lose compatibility once a new game came out. The original Diamond, Pearl, and Platinum games can still be booted up and the underworld can still be played in even though the series has moved on.

9 Overworld Shinies & Let’s Go-Style Chaining

Let’s Go had a lot of fun features that were added in to connect with Go and make sure it wasn’t just another Kanto reboot. One of the best things that it had was to have the overworld encounters show if they were going to be shiny or not before the player ever bothered to enter the battle.



It also had a fascinating chaining method where rarer creatures would appear with higher encounter chains, but then after it hit its maximum, the player could just run around in circles to spawn more of them until something they wanted finally showed up. So instead of fighting five hundred battles with the same creature, the player could also be hatching eggs while watching for shinies to pop up in the grass.

8 Riding Larger Pokémon

Riding Pokémon has appeared in a few of the games thus far, but disappeared for Sword and Shield. However, only Let’s Go made it so that the larger follower Pokémon the player actually owns could be ridden. It even made it so certain creatures could have extra abilities after a certain point in the game if they were being ridden, such as how flying Pokémon could go over things after the defeat of the Elite Four.

Follower Pokémon in general keep finding ways to appear in the series, even if in just small areas so there’s hope that being able to ride the player’s own followers will make a return in future games.

7 Wild Secret Bases & Decorations

Secret bases were awesome, especially in the Hoenn games where they could be found throughout the world in different features. They also provided a late-game money sink. With how camping works in Sword and Shield, it could really open up for some fun player interactions and minigames as well as showing off individual styles.

Since secret bases were dulled down but still included in the Sinnoh games, there are some high hopes about them appearing in the new remakes.

6 The Dream World Or Safari Zone

The most appealing part of the dream world was that players could connect to a service on their computers and explore a whole world, go through some puzzles, and collect Pokémon in special balls. With how many different services and games are out there for the Pokémon franchise, having more ways to interact with different programs and bring the fruits of that work to the main series games was always fun.

A similar but in-game minigame was the Safari Zone, which has not been in the more recent additions except for Let’s Go. Having a special in-game area where there are unique balls and exclusive Pokémon such as the Safari Zone always added another level of exploration and opened up for some good breeding and collecting.

5 Wondertrading Eggs

The Kalos games took away the fun little spinning, egg trading minigame and just added eggs to the regular link trading roster. The problem is that since that original little exchange where eggs could be traded between multiple players and thus giving out a potentially random egg, there has not been any way to get random eggs outside of user-made events.

They cannot be included in Wonder or Surprise trades and cannot go into Home to be included in those features or dragged around different games utilizing the same system.

4 The Whole National Pokédex

Potentially the biggest point of contention has been the removal of the National Pokédex in Sword and Shield. The DLC added more of them, but there are still a large number of creatures that cannot go anywhere but hang out in Home.

One of the biggest points brought up is that the models had to be updated, but all of the models are the same as in Pokémon Go and there are plenty of those that are still locked from the modern games.

3 Box Pokémon Go To Poké Pelago

Sun and Moon might not have been everyone’s favorite additions to the series, but they were still vibrant and cute with lots of good features. One of which was the inclusion of Poké Pelago. Instead of the user’s Pokémon going into a computer and bringing up a lot of horrifying assumptions and fan theories, they were transported to a small collection of islands where they could train, play, relax, or explore.

It was an adorable time-waster that made it feel less upsetting to some players that their beloved Pokémon were still getting taken care of and living good lives somewhere happy and safe.

2 Wild Horde Battles

Horde battles opened up a lot of unique battle styles and allowed for yet another method of shiny hunting. They made it so a whole group of wild Pokémon would appear, leading for the player getting to use moves and combinations that they wouldn’t otherwise be able to do.

They also required the player to get rid of every other nearby creature in order to capture the one they wanted, which makes a lot of sense for creatures that are more communal. It also was an excellent way to get a lot of experience fast when trying to level up, negating some of the grind.

1 Dressing Up For Contests

Contests were some of the most unique and fun parts of the Hoenn games. There were similar things in later games, including the ability to add stickers or outfits on their contestants to add to the points and appeal of the particular contest.

There was also the Cosplay Pikachu in Omega Ruby and Ultra Sapphire which could be dressed up and given a unique move based on her outfit. In Let’s Go there was the ability to dress up the player’s starter, giving a good money sink and making for some really cute combinations that could totally make its way over to some more contests.
