Pokémon 10 Temporary Forms That Should Have Been Evolutions

Not every Pokémon evolves, and sometimes that’s just fine. Typically a Pokémon that doesn’t evolve has some other flair that makes it worth keeping around, such as good stats, game-breaking moves, or merely overall cuteness.

Some Pokémon have temporary special forms that grant an additional power boost or play into a gimmick, and a few of these temporary forms are worthy of being part of a Pokémon’s evolutionary line — especially for Pokémon who otherwise don’t get to evolve.

10 Mega Mawile Deserved To Be A Real Evolution

Pokémon 10 Temporary Forms That Should Have Been Evolutions

Mawile is one of those Pokémon that doesn’t naturally have an evolution in any capacity. It’s only ever Mawile, nothing before and nothing after. However, it does have a Mega Evolution which splits the deceiving head-mouth into two and amps up its design.

It gets a massive power boost too, to the point that if a Hidden Ability Mawile has a perfect IV and EV stat, the Sheer Power Ability it gains will break the Attack stat ceiling. Mawile’s Mega form gave it such an edge it had to be banned from competitive play. All of this together makes it feel like Mawile should have just evolved into this powerhouse instead of it being a brief temporary state limited only to the occasional battle where it can take the spotlight.

9 Sunshine Cherrim Seems Like The Next Stage

Pokémon 10 Temporary Forms That Should Have Been Evolutions

Cherrim starts out as a cute little set of cherries when it’s a Cherubi. Then it evolves into a shy little flower bud with a special Ability that allows it to take on a happier flower form in Bright Sunlight conditions brought on by Sunny Day, Drought, or similar environmental effects.

It looks more like the next step in its evolutionary chain rather than something temporary, and really just wastes precious seconds every single time it has to do a form switch for few reasons outside of a cosmetic change.

8 Aerodactyl Could Have Just Evolved Into Mega Aerodactyl

Pokémon 10 Temporary Forms That Should Have Been Evolutions

Mega Aerodactyl was one of those Pokémon that showed players what could have been. Unlike most of the other Fossil Pokémon, Aerodactyl has no subsequent evolution in its line. It’s also the only one capable of Mega Evolution, which almost feels like a kick in the teeth to some fans.

Instead of getting an awesome new version of one of the most beloved Fossils, fans were given only a temporary form that paled in comparison to most of the other Megas. However, it still would have made an awesome new Aerodactyl evolution, one that Trainers have been waiting for since the beginning.

7 Gigantamax Flapple/Appletun Could Have Been The Step Before A Split Evolution

Pokémon 10 Temporary Forms That Should Have Been Evolutions

Typically, a Gigantamax version of a Pokémon looks more imposing than what it came from. That’s not really the case with either Flapple or Appletun, both of which share the same Gigantamax form.

This shared Gigantamax form could have easily been an evolution between Applin and the other two variants. Instead of giving an Applin a special exclusive evolution in each game, it could have gotten this form — which really looks like a step between instead of a step ahead.

6 Mega Pinsir Would Finally Be A Worthy Counterpart To Scizor

Pokémon 10 Temporary Forms That Should Have Been Evolutions

Pinsir and Scyther started out as counterparts to each other. They were individual game exclusives in the same generation and were roughly on par with each other. Once Generation II came around, though, Scyther was given Scizor as an evolution, and Pinsir was left behind.

Fast forward to the era of Mega Evolutions and Pinsir finally got an amazing new form that both builds on what came before and keeps it feeling recognizable enough without being too close. If only this had been an actual evolution, it might have still stood against Scizor as a proper counterpart.

5 School Form Wishiwashi Would Have Made For Cool Evolution Requirements

Pokémon 10 Temporary Forms That Should Have Been Evolutions

Wishiwashi has a unique Schooling Ability which works great in the anime and the manga but just takes up time within the games. Before the games were released, many fans actually expected that this was going to be a proper evolution to Wishiwashi and were sorely disappointed when it turned out to just be a temporary form.

This hulking mass of collected Wishiwashi really suffered statistically from just being a new form affected by Ability-altering moves instead of being a full evolution. It could have been a really impressive line, but instead, it’s a drag.

4 Mega Audino Would Make An Ideal Blissey Counterpart

Pokémon 10 Temporary Forms That Should Have Been Evolutions

Audino tried so hard to be the new Chansey when it debuted. Gaining its Mega Evolution as a base standard evolution instead could have really done it, too, as Mega Audino does make an exceptional healer.

However, in games where Mega Evolution isn’t possible, it’s just an Audino with no other creatures in its line, making Chansey the superior option as far as cute healers go.

3 Gigantamax Alcreamie Would Have Been The Ultimate Confectionery

Pokémon 10 Temporary Forms That Should Have Been Evolutions

Alcreamie gets an impressively fascinating method of evolution and one extreme Gigantamax form to boot. Even if the cake skirt wasn’t nearly as layered, Alcreamie could have just taken this form as a standard evolution and worked wonders with it.

The skirt could have taken on layers based on which candies were used to evolve it to the second stage, creating even more variations on its already massive pool of potential aesthetics. Instead, this adorably massive variant of the Cream Pokémon is limited to just three rounds per battle to show off its amazing design.

2 Mega Abomasnow Looks Like A Logical Upgrade

Pokémon 10 Temporary Forms That Should Have Been Evolutions

Mega Abomasnow gave some serious life to a Pokémon that had been previously ignored by the majority of players. This hulking brute just screams third-stage evolution instead of temporary form.

Instead of being a bipedal tree, it ended up more quadrupedal and gained extra shoots, ice, and spines along with an even more imposing face than it already had. This Mega Evolution should have been a final form, keeping its usefulness going for future games instead of dwindling out.

1 Minior’s Cores Could Have Been Stone Evolutions

Eevee has a whopping eight possible evolutions. Minior has six alternate colored core forms that only appear once its Shields Down Ability is activated. It’s a little strange that this Pokémon loses the special effects of its Ability once it reaches half HP as-is, so instead, it could have just had another little gimmick and used some stones to evolve into each of the colors to extend its usefulness.

As it stands, the only reason to collect all of the Minior colors is purely for completionist purposes, but they could have gained different typings and new moves if they were instead evolutionary states.
