The show Pokémon has been around for more than 20 years; and as long as the games are doing well, it may very well go on for another 20. During that time, this series has seen a lot of changes. Each area brings new adventures, new Pokémon help shake up the narrative, and different forces of evil seek to challenge Ash and friends.

There are few constants in the series; but if there’s one that fans thought was going to last forever, it would be Brock. Brock was Ash’s longest-lasting companion and, for many, is his definitive one. Brock would sadly stop serving as a recurring member in the series, but he’d go on to leave the fans with plenty of fond memories. However, with a decades-old career, there are a few stray things about Brock in the anime that some people are just bound to miss.

10 He Currently Aspires To Become A Pokémon Doctor

Much like Ash, Brock traveled in the series with one consistent dream: to become a Pokémon Breeder. He’d chant about it nearly as much as Ash did, and his skills and knowledge would come in hand on various occasions, as he’d treat friend and foe alike when no Poke Center would be in sight.

However, when his role would start to run its course, he’d begin to look at other career opportunities. After Pokémon Diamond and Pearl, Brock realized that he could become a Pokemon Doctor, essentially a more advanced version of what a Breeder was doing, and left Ash’s side to pursue it.

9 He Changes Voice Actors In Season 9

Because of his extended length in the series, it’s hard to forget a voice like Brock’s, just like how it’s hard to forget Ash’s. For the series’ first 8 seasons, Brock would be synonymous with his English voice actor, Eric Stuart (who’s also notable for a few other, Shonen roles).

However, starting with Season 9, Stuart would be replaced with Bill Rogers who continued the role into Pokémon Sun and Moon. While Rogers’ time with the series has certainly been exceptional, there really is no beating Eric Stuart’s iconic delivery of the “drying pan” line.

8 Takeshi’s Paradise Is The Only Song He Knows

For those who don’t pay attention to the series’ ending themes, “Takeshi’s Paradise” is the ninth ending song to the series. Ever since its inception, Brock would be part of a running gag whenever he’d have to entertain a live crowd. Whenever Brock has to entertain people, either as part of a distraction or some intermission, he would near ceaselessly sing “Takeshi’s Paradise” with very little variation.

By Brock’s own account, this is because “Takeshi’s Paradise” is the only song that he knows. This is even funnier given the fact that Brock’s Japanese dub name is Takeshi.

7 Brock Kept Photos Of His Friends During His Studies

Despite having been gone for a good portion of the series, Brock never forgets his friends. In a special episode of Diamond and Pearl, it was revealed that Brock keeps photos of Ash, Misty, Max, May, and even Piplup and Pikachu as keepsakes.

He apparently looks to them every now and then during his studies to become a Pokémon Doctor. While a short reminder, it’s nice to see how close Ash and his friends are even when they’re apart.

6 His Full Name Is Brock Harrison

For most of the series’, fans could swear that Brock only had one name, like Cher or Madonna. However, after an interview with his original voice actor, Eric Stuart, fans would learn that his last name is, in fact, Harrison. That is to say that Brock’s real name is Brock Harrison.

Let that sink in. This is never actually stated in the series; but since 2003, Stuart has held on to the idea that Brock’s last name is Harrison and there really hasn’t been any push back.

5 He Can Tell The Difference Between Each Nurse Joy And Officer Jenny

It’s no secret that Brock is the Yamcha/Sanji/Miroku/Jiraiya of Pokémon, i.e. he’s the lovestruck idiot of the group. Whenever he sees a girl in the series, he easily falls head over heels for them and succumbs to lamenting his love for them.

While this is more of a traditional, running gag in Japanese media, Brock has turned this into sort of a superpower, as this interest allows him to tell the difference between the seemingly identical Nurse Joy’s and Officer Jenny’s. This is mostly done by detecting some details, such as the different emblems between each officer’s hat; but so far, Brock is one of the few people in the series (if there are any others) who can actually do this.

4 He Was Replaced By Tracey Because Of Localization Issues

Despite being Ash’s most consistent companion, Brock was taken out of the series early on. When Pokémon started to have a much larger global reach, its creators decided to replace him with the now-forgotten stand-in, Tracey.

As heard from the series director, Masamitsu Hidaka, this is because the animators feared that Western audiences would think that Brock’s depiction was racist, on account of how his eyes were drawn. While Tracey was an interesting character for some time, he would later be switched out again for Brock when the creators realized that there really wasn’t an issue.

3 He Once Met Cilan

Long after leaving the series in Diamond and Pearl but a little before he’d return in Sun and Moon, Brock would actually make a surprising cameo within Pokémon Black and White. During this season, Ash traveled with a Dragon-type trainer known as Iris and the Pokémon Connoisseur, Cilan.

As a connoisseur, Cilan would take the “Brock” role of the group as someone who knew a lot about Pokémon and looked after them. This would come in handy after he’d cross paths with a certain doctor-in-training. The two would quickly become friends and go on to help a Gyrados. Unfortunately, the two would leave each other without ever learning the other’s name or their relationship with Ash Ketchum.

2 His Mom Uses Water Type Pokémon

Thanksgiving dinners must be weird at the Harrison household. While Brock was away with Ash during one of his journeys, his mother, Lola, had apparently returned to the Pewter Gym, only to humiliate the gym’s legacy in grand fashion. For the uninitiated, Pokémon’s rock/paper/scissors rules set dictates that water-type Pokémon have an advantage over rock-types.

Brock’s dad and the Pewter Gym as a whole specialize in rock-type Pokémon. Lola exclusively uses water types. Bad things ensue while Brock is away and when Lola wants to have some fun. While the family affair is better watched than explained, let it be known that Brock has an interesting family dynamic in more ways than one.

1 A Few Girls Actually Like Him

Romantic rejection is oddly a core thing in Japanese comedy. Otaku everywhere already know and love the bit where Side CharacterA gets rejected by Girl #1,899 and gets dragged away by Female Cast Member B. It’s an anime trope that Brock wears very well, but it’s not one that the series is afraid of breaking. In a little more than a few cases, Brock is actually able to find girls that reciprocate his feelings.

This list includes Wilhomena, Natalie, Autumn, Lucy (the infamous trainer who had a thing for his eyes), and, most recently, Kahuna Olivia.
