Pokémon 10 Times Natural Talent Beat Hard Work

Most Pokémon battles are won through the hard work and determination of a good trainer and their team. The series also often shows one of the main characters losing a battle with another trainer (sometimes more than once). However, this gives the losing trainer the opportunity to make their Pokémon stronger before returning to battle once again.

That said, sometimes the show proves that hard work and determination aren’t enough to beat the best trainers. There are trainers such as the main character, Ash Ketchum, who have won several battles through natural talent alone, therefore proving how hard work isn’t everything.

10 Ash VS. Brandon (Battle Frontier)

Brandon is the best of the Frontier Brains, which makes him the Pyramid King. Consequently, this isn’t a position one attains without the kind of hard work and dedication Brandon is shown to possess. Ash initially loses two battles to Brandon, and it seems that he’s about to lose again with Pikachu against Brandon’s Regice. In the midst of the battle, Pikachu is frozen solid and almost unable to fight. However, after a speech from Ash, Pikachu is able to break free from the ice and secure a victory. Despite Brandon’s best efforts to restore Regice’s health, Ash wins the battle with quick thinking and natural instincts.

9 Ash VS. Morty (Johto League Champions)

When a gym battle between him and Ash ensues, the rivals are down to their last Pokémon. Morty proves himself a worthy adversary when his Gengar attacks Ash’s Noctowl while remaining invisible. If it wasn’t for Ash ordering Noctowl to send its Confusion through the whole building, Gengar would have remained invisible and cost Ash the battle.

8 Ash VS. Viola (XY)

Viola is the first gym leader Ash encounters in the XY series. Specializing in bug-type Pokémon, she is prideful, strong-willed, and gifted in strategy. Everything she does seems effortless, including winning her first battle against Ash.

As soon as the battle begins, Viola uses Surskit to create an icy tundra, which unbalances Ash’s Pikachu and makes him an easy target. However, hoping to even the playing field, Ash sends out Fletchling. Normally, this would be a great strategy since Fletchling has the type advantage of flight, which helps it avoid the icy floor. However, despite Ash’s best efforts, Viola makes her Vivillon trap Fletchling in webs previously made by Surskit, easily defeating him.

7 Ash VS. Chuck (Johto League Champions)

When Chuck first appears, he’s battling his Machoke in hand-to-hand combat to personally see how far his Pokémon has advanced in training. He also shares the same diet of Pokémon-power-food, which strengthens both Pokémon and trainers.

Chuck dedicated his life to customizing the perfect training program as the gym leader of Cianwood City. When Ash’s Bayleaf battles Chuck’s Machoke, Misty and Brock offer advice that could make Ash’s battle easier. However, Ash decides that he wants to win the battle the hard way, and although his Pokémon aren’t trained like Chuck’s, Ash wins the battle in a brilliant display of natural talent.

6 Ash VS. Lenora (Black & White)

Both equally hard-working, this battle had to be won by the most talented trainer. Lenora proves herself a master strategist, forcing Ash to think outside the box when she uses roar to switch out his Pokémon. From there, she wastes little time finishing him off. Ultimately, this forces Ash to train harder to beat her in a rematch.

5 Ash VS. Lt. Surge (Indigo League)

Lt Surge is the gym leader of Vermilion City. He believes in only using the toughest Pokémon. As a result, he makes his Pokémon evolve quickly so they’ll learn their most powerful moves as soon as possible. In their first battle, Surge proves to Ash how tough his Raichu is, which knocks Pikachu out within seconds.

Undeterred, Ash returns in the hope that his Pikachu’s agility will be enough to save it from Raichu’s strength. However, it isn’t Agility that wins this match. When Raichu uses its all-powerful Thunderbolt, Pikachu uses its tail as a ground to save it from the attack. Once the Raichu is out of electricity, Pikachu is quickly able to beat the Pokémon. A talented move from a talented Pokémon!

4 Ash VS. Dolan (XY)

Dolan is a Pokémon smuggler in XY. Ash finds a Scatterbug in one of Dolan’s traps and quickly befriends it by freeing it and taking it to the nearest Pokemon center for recovery. He then works with Officer Jenny to stop Dolan.

When confronted by Ash, Dolan is a man with everything to lose and battles like it. He uses his Diggersby against Ash’s Froakie, and although Ash has a type advantage, he almost loses the battle. However, the rescued Scatterbug, now an evolved Spewpa, rushes to Ash’s defense, protecting him in return for saving it. Enraged, Dolan doubles down on his attacks but Spewpa evolves to Vivillon and wins the battle. Although Ash does very little, he shows that the mark of a great trainer is through their bond with their Pokémon.

3 Ash VS. Brock (Indigo)

During the battle, Brock puts in the minimal effort because he knows his Pokémon are strong enough to win the fight for him. When Ash sends Pikachu to battle Onix, the match is over in two moves. The battle is an ode to Brock’s experience and talent, and it also reminds viewers that a trainer needs more than confidence and determination to win.

2 Ash VS. Rinto (Master Journeys)

Pokémon 10 Times Natural Talent Beat Hard Work

Determined to be the best trainer, Ash accepts a challenge to battle from a rival trainer, Rinto. Ash throws everything he has into this battle, ordering his Farfetch’d to attack Rinto’s Gallade. Rinto and Gallade are able to showcase their natural talent when Rinto doesn’t even have to tell Gallade what to do.

Gallade is able to dodge every attack from Farfetch’d, allowing Rinto to decide a plan of action without taking any damage in the onslaught. Once he’s seen enough, Rinto ends the battle in one move. After the battle, Rinto expresses his wishes to battle Ash again in the future, provided that he becomes more synchronized with his Pokémon.

1 Ash & Goh VS. Mewtwo (Journeys)

Ash & Goh challenge Mewtwo to a battle: one trainer hoping to catch the Pokémon and the other aiming to gain valuable experience. Mewtwo accepts their challenge. However, as it’s naturally talented in intellect, strength, and agility, and with no limitation to the moves it can use, it greatly outmatches the trainers.

For the majority of the battle against Ash’s Lucario and Goh’s Cinderace, Mewtwo does little more than evade attacks to give the trainers a sporting chance. However, as soon as Mewtwo has had enough, it ends the battle with a few well-placed attacks followed by one critical finishing move. Mewtwo could have ended this battle in seconds, but instead allowed the trainers to try their best.
