Despite what many may say about Ash Ketchum, The Pokémon Company doesn’t want to set aside his character to make way for a new main protagonist yet. Whether it’s because they feel doing so would result in some backlash with the fanbase, Ash Ketchum isn’t retiring from his position.

On the other hand, Trainer Red, a character many love over Ash, has also been with fans for a while now despite not being the protagonist for every Pokémon game, which is only one of many things different between him and Ash Ketchum.

10 Red Won The Kanto Region’s Pokémon League

Although Ash’s defeated some of Pokémon anime’s strongest trainers in recent years, it took him a while to finally win a Pokémon league. Even in Ash’s home region of Kanto, he couldn’t get the job done. However, Red managed to defeat Kanto’s elite four and Pokémon champion, Blue, to become the region’s new champion.

Not only did Ash always get defeated by Gary, but he lost the Kanto Pokémon League because he couldn’t urge his Charizard to stop napping during their battle against Ritchie. Red maintained perfect synergy with his Pokémon during the league and never had to worry about any of them lollygagging during an intense match.

Pokémon Sun & Moon gave fans an intriguing new twist on Pokemon’s structure concerning the island Kahuna’s and their leagues. Like the games, Ash also participated in some of the Pokémon Sun & Moon anime’s best battles and helped generate some of the funniest memes the series offered to fans.

On the other hand, the Pokémon Sun & Moon protagonist’s battle against Red gave fans a nostalgia trip that Ash’s Pokémon battles in Alola couldn’t reach. The Pokémon Sun & Moon protagonist didn’t appear in the anime like others, so to have Elio and Selene face the first-ever protagonist again felt like an apologetic treat.

Ash’s explored many Pokémon regions in the anime, and there were many regular, mythical, and legendary Pokémon he didn’t bother catching. Unlike Ash, Red’s devotion to Professor Oak’s desire for him to complete the Kanto Region Pokédex was astounding to witness in Pokémon Origins and the original Pokémon Red & Blue games.

From simplistic Pokémon like Rattata to fearsome legendary creatures like Mewtwo, Red’s determination to “catch them all” outshines Ash’s motivation to become a Pokémon master in some aspects. Despite all that, it’s no wonder many adore Red as a Pokémon protagonist.

3 Red Doesn’t Like Talking To People Unlike Ash

Like Link from The Legend Of Zelda video game franchise, Red is known for keeping to himself and filling the role as the silent yet cool-headed character archetype. There was even an instance in Pokémon Sun & Moon where Red’s rival Blue pokes fun at his silence before their battle against Alola’s protagonist Elio or Selene.

Unlike Red, Ash ia all about getting his point across when communicating with his Pokémon or human companions. Even though his confidence and arrogance can sometimes lead to him losing minor respect from his friends, Ash loves meeting and learn more about people during his journies.

2 Red Has Lost To Ethan From Pokémon Gold, Silver, & Crystal While Ash May Have Defeated Him

Although many fans have different favorite memories with the Pokémon games, many will attest to their battle against Red on Mt. Silver to be one of the best Pokémon battles they’ve had throughout all the titles. However, in Red’s perspective, it may not have been his favorite, considering his loss to Ethan.

Unlike Red, Ash possibly managed to defeat Ethan in a short clip from one of IMDb’s favorite Pokémon movies called Pokémon: Zoroark: Master Of Illusions. Although the match ends on a cliffhanger, Ethan’s Donphan appeared severely injured by Pikachu’s Iron Tail attack and was having trouble getting up from the attack.

1 Red Loves Traveling Alone While Ash’s Always Accompanied By Two Or More Human Companions

Even if Ash isn’t a fan-favorite character from the Pokémon anime, his different companions he has alongside him gave fans plenty of reasons to watch each new Pokémon anime episode. Unlike Ash, Red preferred traveling alone and has even defeated some of Ash’s companions like Misty and Brock in gym battles.

Further, Red’s primary focus to complete the Pokédex for Professor Oak and defeat his rival Blue was what drove him most on his journey. Alongside being a protagonist that liked keeping to himself, Red’s attention and dreams felt more fit for a solo journey rather than a quest surrounded by others.
