Pokémon, the animated series, has continued a set formula for over a decade. The tv series has continued to star Ash Ketchum, the 10-year-old boy who aspires to be the best Pokémon Trainer. With his best friend and top Pokémon at his side, Pikachu, they travel to different regions to compete in Pokémon Tournaments. When a new series is released, it usually corresponds with the latest edition of the game at that time.
Pokémon: XY was based off the Nintendo 3DS game. Ash had the same aspirations as the previous series: he wanted to collect the necessary gym badges to compete in the Pokémon Championship. Though the season starred Ash, it featured Serena, the heroine from the XY game.
Serena proved herself to be more than a sidekick. Though the beginning of the series focused on Serena chasing Ash, her stories become just as important as Ash’s quest for greatness. Like many teenagers, she begins to think about what dreams to chase. It seemed like everyone else, but Serena had something to strive for. Viewers watched her grow from a normal girl to one of the most popular Pokémon Performers in the Kalos Region.

25 Has Only Displayed Kindness
In the first Pokémon series, Ash stole Misty’s bicycle to race Pikachu to a Pokémon Center. The bike was destroyed, and Misty never forgave him. Misty’s actions weren’t unusual. Other female members of Ash’s group have ruthlessly bullied him.
Serena is one of the few companions who hasn’t insulted the Pokémon hero.
A fan from an early age, Serena has lifted Ash’s spirits, even in his darkest moments. She’s there for him when he needs someone to talk to, but isn’t afraid to give Ash a stern lecture when appropriate.
24 Never Gives Up
When Serena was young, she was forced to attend the Pokémon Summer Camp. Unfamiliar with the outdoor activities, she got lost in the forest. She hurt her knee and thought she would be trapped there forever. Thankfully, Ash appeared while on the hunt for a Pokémon. He wrapped her knee with a handkerchief and helped her escape the forest. Ash said, “Don’t give up until it’s over.” His words of encouragement stayed with Serena for years after. She used the phrase as a personal motto during the series.
23 Pampers Her Pokémon
Most trainers keep their Pokémon inside of their Poké Balls. They only release them when it’s time to battle. Pikachu is the only one who has refused to stay inside of a ball for the course of the series.

22 Didn’t Receive A Special Treatment
Pikachu uses Thunderbolt several times throughout the series. The electric-type uses the move to protect himself or fight off Team Rocket. Unfortunately, Pikachu has accidentally used the move on some of Ash’s closest companions. Pikachu has electrocuted Misty, May, and Dawn’s bicycles, which destroyed them. The Pokémon has also shocked Iris and Bonnie.
Serena has been the only female traveling companion who hasn’t felt Pikachu’s wrath.
Either Pikachu never saw her as a threat, or she knew to stay out of the way Thunderbolt was flying.
21 Was Rescued As A Child
From an early age, Serena wasn’t sure what she wanted to become. She was forced to attend a Summer Camp for Pokémon, which only caused her grief. Meeting Ash was the bright spot in the entire vacation. He not only comforted her when she was hurt, but she developed a crush on him.
Serena never forgot Ash, and he became her inspiration to travel the region. When they reunited, Ash didn’t remember the incident. He did remember the “girl wearing the straw hat.” It made Serena thrilled that he recognized her, which only intensified her crush.

It’s not uncommon that kids don’t want to study or train. Serena was forced to participate in daily Rhyhorn Races by her mother, Grace. Her mother assumed that Serena would follow in her footsteps.

Ash becomes sick in “Battling at Full Volume!” after training at night. Serena stays with Ash while Clemont and his sister search for medicine. While caring for Ash, a challenger named Jimmy, who also owns a Pikachu, appears. Serena doesn’t want Ash’s illness to become worse.
Serena decides to take his place in battle by wearing his clothing and working with Pikachu.
They put up a tough fight against Jimmy. Unfortunately, the match is interrupted by Team Rocket. We don’t know who would have won, but Serena proved she has the skills in battle.
18 Believes In Strength Over Numbers
Pokémon can become a game of collections for many. It took Serena forty episodes before catching her second Pokémon, Pancham. It wasn’t until episode 95 when she took a shy Eevee under her care.
Serena only had three Pokémon join her team for the duration of the series. Unlike previous female companions, Serena focused on her human friends and their struggles more than her own. The Pokémon she did care for received more attention because there were so few of them.
17 Given A Formal Invitation
Serena finally manages to catch up with Ash in the sixth episode of the series, “Battling on Thin Ice!” While Ash is unsure of his skills, Serena supports him, no matter what.
After Ash earns the Bug Badge, he takes a moment to speak to Serena again. He asks her where she plans to travel next. She isn’t sure because she was only trying to catch up with Ash. He suggests they travel to Cyllage City together. Clemont and Bonnie agree to Ash’s decision. Serena happily accepts.
16 Had To Play Catch Up
Most of the older females that join Ash’s team appear early in the series. Misty joined in the first episode of the series. Since Serena had to catch up with Ash, it took her longer to become part of his group officially.
Serena became the first female to take seven episodes before joining Ash’s band of companions.
Serena was also the first that Ash has formally invited to join his group. It would be a decision that changed her life forever.
15 Can Mend And Create

Her friends considered the video a success, and Serena was content. The video paid off because it made her famous in the Kalos Region. People began to recognize Serena and her Fennekin. Her success continued after earning her way into the Master Class. The performance was filmed and broadcast all over Kalos.

Although viewers were aware of Serena’s upbringing into Rhyhorn Racing, her companions weren’t yet knowledgeable. Her history paid off since it helped her grow closer to Ash.
After Ash expressed in an interest Rhyhorn Racing, Serena helped train him.
She remembered all of the training her mother put her through. Serena finally realized that her mother was only trying to help, not discourage her. Thanks to Ash, Serena realized that Rhyhorn racing may not be so bad after all.

Serena’s talents are first showcased in episode seven, where she prepares cookies for friends. She also crafts meals for her companions in Pokémon the Movie: Volcanion and the Mechanical Marvel. Her baking skills are also essential in creating Poké Puffs, which are used during Pokémon Performances to impress the judges.

The characters in animated series usually wear a single outfit for the entirety of the series. They may change for a few special occasions, but not for long. Serena has made drastic changes.
After joining Ash’s companions, Serena switched into a new outfit for the long journey.

During the series, Serena has worked hard to become a top Pokémon Performer. She earned her way into the Master Class of performers and coordinators and faced off against the current Kalos Queen, Aria.
Though Serena didn’t win, she was approached by judge and mentor Palermo. The former Kalos Queen wanted to take Serena under her wing, but Serena refused. Serena wanted to continue journeying with Ash, Clemont, and Bonnie. Palermo was disappointed but kept the offer open in the future.
