Picture this. It is the holiday season circa the late 90s/early 2000s. You are barely ten-years-old and sitting in the backseat of your parents’ car. They are seated in the front seats, bouncing back and forth between singing along to the radio, arguing about which turn-off to take, and talking about whose in-laws were worse behaved over the holiday visits. You tune them out and turn your attention to the game system in your hands. You start it up and load up your favorite Pokémon game. Though you struggle with some aspects of the game that are a bit above your skill level, you love the game through and through and would spend the rest of your life playing it if you could.

Now you’re a little bit older, a little bit wiser, but your love for the Pokémon series remains unchanged and unchallenged. You still love the game with every fiber of your being and dedicate every spare moment to its characters. But now you no longer have to struggle over its harder moments and crinkle your brows in frustration. You can simply search the internet for the answers you crave. This article is a hodgepodge of facts and tips that players can use, at their discretion, to get through those trickier moments in the game.

So sit back, relax, and let the warm glow of childhood nostalgia take over as I take you through these 25 tips and tricks for the earlier generations of Pokémon games.

25 Memorizing The Type Chart Will Give You Huge Advantages

Pokémon battles are intense and there’s so much to learn, where do you even start?

Well, I have just the answer for you. It’s not the moves or abilities, or even the Pokémon themselves. Start by learning the eighteen (seventeen for the purposes of this list) types and how they interact. Battles basically revolve around the type of Pokémon and how the move type being used affects it. Pokémon have up to two types, and dual typing can change how a certain type can affect them. Memorizing the chart can give you a huge advantage right off the bat.

24 Gotta Remember To STAB: Same Type Attack Bonus

Time for more type-related knowledge. This one is move types. If your Pokémon uses a move that matches its type, it gains a 1.5 multiplier to its damage output, known as Same Type Attack Bonus. STAB for short. So as a child, when you loaded up Charizard with Flamethrower, Fire Spin, Fire Blast, and Flame Wheel, you did have the right idea, but remember that type-coverage is also important. A good tip for battles is, when in doubt, STAB!

23 The Easy Way To Beat Onix

Pokémon 25 Tricks From The Original Games Casual Fans Have No Idea About

Brock is the first tough opponent of the Red, Blue, and Yellow games. The Gym leader of Pewter City uses the super defensively tough Rock type. If you picked Charmander as your starter, you might struggle with this challenge. Fortunately, there are a couple things you can do to help. Brock’s Onix has a poor special stat, meaning it’s very susceptible to special-based moves.

You can go out and train up a Caterpie until it evolves into a Butterfree and use its special-based attack, Confusion. Alternatively, you can use your Charmander’s Ember attack despite it being Not Very Effective.

22 The Easiest Way To Destroy Dragonite

This is an Endgame tip. You are about to become the champion of the Pokémon League, all you need to do is defeat Lance and his Dragonite. Dragonite is tough and can easily KO your entire team. Never fear, for the often-overlooked Poison type is here. You see, Lance will use a move that is super effective against your Pokémon if he can, even if the move doesn’t do damage. Dragonite knows the Psychic (strong vs. Poison) skill Barrier which increases defense. Twitch Plays Pokémon exploited this with a Venomoth that slowly whittled down Dragonite while it kept trying to use Barrier.

21 No Need To Use The Master Ball

In the Gold, Silver, and Crystal generation, we were introduced to roaming legendaries, Entei, Raikou, and Suicune. Instead of battling you like a normal wild Pokémon, these three will just run away as soon as it is their turn. You might think:

“Well, this is clearly what the Master Ball is for.”

But remember that there is only one. What you can do instead is grab a Ghastly and have it learn Mean Look. this will prevent it from running away and force it to battle you.

20 How To Get Pikachu In Red And Blue

If you’re playing Red or Blue, you might find yourself thinking “Hey, where can I find a Pikachu, it’s the series mascot and I have not seen the cute little guy?” Well, if you played Yellow version you would get a Pikachu for free, but in Red and Blue, you have to search through Viridian Forest exhaustively. Pikachu will only appear for you in this one area and only has a three-percent chance of appearing in any given encounter.

19 Pay Attention To Individual Values

It’s time to delve deeper into the mechanics of Pokémon.

Every Pokémon has two sets of hidden values.

These first ones are called Individual Values (IV). they are a number between 0 and 31 that is applied to each of your Pokémon’s stats (HP, Attack, Speed, Defense, and Special Attack/Defense). This affects the maximum that your Pokémon can grow in each stat. There is no way to view these in-game but there is an NPC that can give you an idea of how good your IVs are.

18 EVs (No, Not That One)

Effort values are the second of the hidden stats a Pokémon has. These affect how much a Pokémon can grow in a stat on level up. they are gained by defeating Pokémon. Every Pokémon will give 1-3 EVs based on what species of Pokémon they are. Defeating a Geodude, for example, will give 1 Def EV. this maxes out at 255 for a single stat and 510 total for a Pokémon. Oddly, a Pokémon can only benefit from EVs in groups of four, so 252 is the magic number for maximum growth.

17 Bulbasaur Is Easy Mode

The hardest part of any Pokémon game is the early game before you have fully built yourself a team. In Red and Blue, the first three gym leaders, Brock, Misty, and Lt. Surge, give players the most grief before the challenge of the Elite Four. However, if you happened to pick Bulbasaur, you will be faced with two incredibly favorable matchups, and a pretty easy time against Lt. Surge as well. In terms of difficulty, Charizard is the most difficult starter and Bulbasaur is the easiest starter.

16 Daycare Eugenics

If you leave two of your Pokémon in the daycare on route 5 and they like each other even a little bit, they will start making BABIES! With all these eggs that your Pokémon produces, you might get an idea. What if I take my knowledge of IVs and try to make the statistically perfect pokemon?

All you need is an abominably large amount of eggs and some way to tell what your Pokémon’s IVs are. Hatch them en mass, up to five at a time, and create the most genetically perfect Pokémon.

15 The Psychic Nerf

In the first Generation, Psychic was the single best type in the game. It had the best moves and the most favorable type match-ups and even had some bugged interactions. Psychic is supposed to be weak to ghost but instead ended up being completely immune to it. In the second generation, that was fixed and two new types were introduced as a way to nerf Psychic types. Dark was immune to Psychic and super effective against it.

Steel resisted Psychic and was super strong defensively.

14 Ditto The Cloner

Ditto is a special little Pokémon. This guy has the uncanny ability to create new little Pokemon with any other Pokémon that is also able to create tiny little genetically similar Pokémon (if you catch my drift.) These offspring will be a clone of the non-Ditto Pokémon (sorry, it won’t make more Dittos or little half-Dittos). This feat can be achieved by putting a Ditto and its chosen gendered beau into a daycare and waiting for the magic to begin.

13 Ghosts Vs. Normal/Fighting Types

Pokémon 25 Tricks From The Original Games Casual Fans Have No Idea About

Ghosts are a special sort of Pokémon. You see, they are not really like the other Pokémon in the sense that they are not able to deal any harm to the normal types of Pokémon nor the traditional fighting types.

But hey, things are not all that bad.

These types of Pokémon are unable to deal out any damage to ghost types either. So, if two cross paths, they may find themselves at a bit of a stalemate. Well, uh, this is awkward.

12 Ghosts Vs. Psychic

Pokémon 25 Tricks From The Original Games Casual Fans Have No Idea About

However, other types of Pokémon will have no issue when it comes to ghost type battles. Psychic types of Pokémon were supposed to be weak to ghosts in the first generation of games; however, there was a bit of a snafu. Instead of making the Psychic types weak to Ghost types in order to give them a bit of an advantage, they ended up making Psychic types completely immune to ghosts entirely. Whoops, uh, sorry about that. That was not what was supposed to happen.

11 Introduction Of Dark And Steel

So, this little unexpected bug ended up making the Psychic types way too powerful.

So the second generation of Pokémon games introduced both the new Steel and Dark types of Pokémon to the world in order to balance things out a little bit. These types can be used to take down Psychic types when needed. Keep that in mind the next time that you run into a wild Psychic type while wandering about the expansive worlds contained within your game.

10 Psychic Weaknesses

Pokémon 25 Tricks From The Original Games Casual Fans Have No Idea About

If you want to know how to beat a Psychic type, I’ve got you covered. Though skill and sheer force may get you there eventually, knowing a Pokémon’s weaknesses can greatly improve those odds in your favor. Psychic types of Pokémon are weak to three types of Pokémon: Ghost (since the glitch was fixed in later editions of the game,) dark types, and bug types. Fun fact: these types are some of the three most common fears that people have.

9 Jolteon, The Mewtwo Counter

Pokémon 25 Tricks From The Original Games Casual Fans Have No Idea About

Certain types have certain moves associated with them. But, if you know your stuff, you may be able to blur the lines between types and slip into another type category through subtypes and exploit another types weakness. In the first generation of Pokémon games, Bug types were the only types that could easily knock out those pesky Psychic types as most of the bugs had a poison subtype. In fact, Jolteon was the only Pokémon to be able to learn pin missile (a traditionally “bug” move) without also having Poison as a designated subtype.

8 Trade Evolutions

Friendship is important. This is a lesson that some people spend their entire lives trying, and failing, to learn. However, the Pokémon games do their best to force you to absorb this lesson as effectively as possible. For example, some Pokémon can only evolve after being sent to a trusted friend.

Two examples of this are Machoke and Alakazam. Don’t even try to send them to a casual acquaintance. It won’t do anything worthwhile. Trusted friends only in this good, wholesome, home.

7 The Poison Type Curse

Pokémon 25 Tricks From The Original Games Casual Fans Have No Idea About

Everyone has a type. A go-to category that they are instinctively drawn towards. If each and every Pokémon player had a Tinder-like account that held their player details and preferences, under “type” you would see Grass, Bug, Fairy, or Poison. For me, that type would be Fairy. But poison type lovers, beware.

There are some issues when it comes to your favorite type. The poison type tends to be very weak in-game. So much so that it was not even considered a primary type in earlier games.

6 The Ghost Type Curse

Pokémon 25 Tricks From The Original Games Casual Fans Have No Idea About

Ah, the infamous move, Curse. Though this unpleasant little blighter affects each and every type in different ways, this curse seems to have it out for the ghost types and ghost type lovers of the world. Though the move Curse has unique and differing effects based on the player’s chosen Pokémon’s type, ghost Pokémon will end up losing half of their HP if hit by this curse. Though their opponent will lose 1/16th per turn, I have to ask if it’s worth the trade-off.
