Starting with Generation VI, the Pokémon franchise began including gimmicks in every new generation. Gen VI had Mega Evolutions, Gen VII had Z-Moves, and Gen VIII has Dynamax. Of the three, Dynamax definitely received the most divisive response, with some arguing it was the most disposable of the three.

Some Pokémon have a special quality to them known as the Gigantamax factor. Unlike simple Dynamaxing, which only increases a Pokémon’s size and HP, Gigantamax allows the Pokémon to actually distort space, affecting the world around them and altering their entire appearance. Currently, 32 Pokémon species have the Gigantamax factor, and while some of them turn into truly enhanced and unique forms, others leave a lot to be desired.

10 Worst: Charizard

One of the most beloved and popular Pokémon of all, Charizard is certainly a fan favorite. It keeps appearing in prominent roles and is even Champion Leon’s ace. After receiving not one but two Mega Evolutions in Generation VI, Charizard also gets a Gigantamax form in Sword & Shield.

However, it’s one of the lamest ones. Charizard basically remains the same and the only noticeable change is that its wings become flames. It’s a cool idea and the execution is effective, but considering other Pokémon suffer considerable alterations to their entire concepts, Charizard’s Gingantamax falls short.

9 Best: Snorlax

One of Generation I’s classic Pokémon, Snorlax is famous for its strength and weight. Already a capable and useful Pokémon, Snorlax reaches an entirely new level when Gigantamaxed and is widely considered to be the most powerful Dynamax Pokémon discovered.

Basically, an entire ecosystem grows on Snorlax’s belly, including moss, seeds, rocks, and even a large tree. Red clouds surround the tree’s top to complete the look. Gigantamax Snorlax is so heavy that it rarely moves and attacks by barely flailing its arms and legs.

8 Worst: Hatterene

Hatterene has one of the strangest and most confusing designs of any Galarian Pokémon. Hair and a pale dress entirely cover its small and seemingly frail body, giving it the appearance of a stereotypical witch. Already intriguing in its normal form, it, of course, deserved a Gigantamax form. Alas, the result is underwhelming.

Like Charizard, Hatterene basically stays the same. Its long hair becomes longer and the hat formation atop its head also changes, becoming more voluminous. Gigantamax Hatterene is known as the “Raging Goddess,” so it’s even more disappointing to waste such a cool moniker on such a standard design.

7 Best: Orbeetle

The evolution of the unbelievably cute Dottler, Orbeetle is a mean-looking Pokémon famous for its large brain and high intelligence. It is the only Pokémon to be a dual Bug/Psychic-type and one of the most gifted creatures in the entire Pokémon world.

In its Gigantamax form, Orbeetle becomes the Pokémon version of a UFO. Its wings disappear and its brain becomes so large that it now resembles a flying saucer. In this form, its intelligence and psychic power reach overwhelming levels and it becomes capable of controlling the minds of everyone in its vicinity.

6 Worst: Garbodor

Already one of the least popular Pokémon, Garbodor didn’t win any new fans with its underwhelming Gigantamax form. When first introduced back in Generation V, many complained about Garbodor’s design. It’s basically a pile of garbage coming out of a torn bag and fans consider it one of the worst designs in the entire franchise.

Gigantamax Garbodor is an even bigger pile of garbage. Discarded toys appear around its body, including a small ship, a car, an airplane, a Poké Doll, a Master Ball. a fish skeleton, and a train. Garbodor is Oleana’s ace Pokémon, but not even she can make this design interesting.

5 Best: Coalossal

Coalossal is already one of the coolest Fire-types and its Gigantamax form only enhances all its greatest qualities. In its normal form, Coalossal is a kaiju-looking Rock/Fire-type with a pile of burning coal atop its head. In its Gigantamax form, it becomes a moving furnace that also resembles a walking volcano.

Gigantamax Coalossal’s fire burns hotter than 3,600 degrees Fahrenheit. Some say that it served as a giant heat source at a time when Galar suffered a harsh and merciless cold wave, saving many lives with its warmth.

4 Worst: Meowth

Another Generation I Pokémon that received lots of exposure in recent generations, Meowth got both a Galarian regional variant and a Gigantamax form. Meowth isn’t the most interesting ok Pokémon design-wise, so fans liked the idea of it having a Gigantamax form. The result was mediocre at best.

Its eyes turn gold and its coin gains a sign, but it’s its body that undergoes the most obvious change, elongating and becoming disproportionatly long. Scientists believe the sign on its coin is one of the keys to unlocking the secrets of Dynamax, so it at least has that going for it.

3 Best: Alcremie

Alcremie is basically whipped cream. One of the sweetest-looking Pokémon of all, this charming and tiny creature becomes a surprisingly powerful and intimidating Pokémon when it Gigantamaxes, albeit in its own form.

Gigantamax Alcremie becomes a five-teared cake that’s also a never-ending fountain of cream. Each of the cake’s layers features one of the many sweets used to evolve it from Milcery. Alcremie is the perfect representation of what Gigantamax should be. becoming an enhanced and more complete version of its original form while retaining the original Pokémon’s essence.

2 Worst: The Galar Starters

With the arrival of the Isle Of Armor DLC, the Galarian starters received their own Gigantamax forms. To make them unique, the designers decided to not make their bodies larger. Instead, each one has a giant prop and their bodies remain largely unchanged. Rillaboom gets a giant drum set, and Cinderace stands atop a giant flaming ball. Inteleon is the only one that suffers a major alteration, with its tail becoming so large it now resembles a pillar upon which it stands, resembling a sniper.

The idea is interesting and a good way of distinguishing them from other Gigantamax forms. However, the execution ends up falling short and doesn’t seem inspired. These three deserved better.

1 Best: Gengar

Gengar remains one of the most popular and demanded Pokémon, twenty-five years after its introduction way back in Generation I. After receiving a Mega Evolution in Generation VI, it got one of the best Gingantamax forms.

When Gigantamaxed, half of Gengar’s body sinks to the ground. Its mouth enlarges, becoming a tunnel of sorts from which a long and purple tongue sticks out. Some believe that the inside of Gengar’s mouth leads not into its body, but into another realm, which makes this not only one of the best-designed Gigantamax forms but also one of the most interesting.
