Overall, the Pokémon Trading Card Game’s newest Sword and Shield sets have been some of the best yet. Many of the cards not only have fantastic artwork, but they are also very viable in competitive play. The most recent set, Darkness Ablaze, is no exception.

Darkness Ablaze has many cards that are worth a pretty penny. The Charizard V Max card alone can fetch triple-digit numbers and the set also comes with some very pretty rainbow full arts and secret rare cards. This set contains several new and strong Pokémon V cards, as well as a collection of playable trainers.

Out of all the cards within the Darkness Ablaze set, five are contenders to be the strongest in the current metagame.

Centiskorch V-Max

Centiskorch V Max fulfills the role of a strong, tanky and reliable fire type card well. Despite this, to get to the powerful V Max card, you have to play Centiskorch V first. Centiskorch V may not be as strong as its V Max counterpart, but it is a solid basic Pokémon with a great one energy attack that discards an energy card from both active Pokémon. With how fast decks have gotten over the years, even slowing down an opponent by one energy attachment could potentially be a big deal.

Centiskorch V Max pairs well with cards like Welder and the newly printed Heat Energy. Its attack does 40 damage plus 40 more for each fire energy attached to it. At the end of the attack, you may also accelerate an energy card from your discard to Centiskorch as well. With the popular nature of Zacian V variants and great fire support in the format right now, Centiskorch V Max could become a very strong contender in the upcoming meta-game.

Turbo Patch

The only trainer card on this list, Turbo Patch certainly earns its way. If there is one thing many longtime players know about the Pokémon Trading Card Game, it’s that no matter the format, accelerating energy will always be powerful.

Turbo Patch opens up the floodgates for more diverse and varied energy acceleration in many new and old decks. The only downside of the card is that its effect relies on a coin flip, so on average, the effect of the card will only be enjoyed half of the time. However, players who win the flip will be able to attach a basic energy from their discard to any card as long as it isn’t a GX.

Coin flips are always a tough catch for a card, but the reward upon landing heads is undoubtedly huge. Overall, it’s the best trainer card in the Darkness Ablaze set, despite its unreliable nature. Cards like Turbo Patch also allow players to get creative with new deck ideas and archetypes. It’s good to see every type in the game get some kind of energy acceleration, no matter how unreliable it may be.

Vikavolt V

Vikavolt V is a simple, yet amazing card. The main attack of note here is its first, Paralyzing Bolt, which does 50 damage and locks the opponent from playing any item cards the following turn. Item lock has always been strong and most likely will continue to be with Vikavolt V.

The card is quite reminiscent of the Seismitoad EX from many years back, which did 30 damage and item locked for two colorless energy. However, Vikavolt V does even more damage and also has the benefit of electric support.

Popular cards like Boltund V, Tapu Koko Prism Star and the new Turbo Patch can be paired with Vikavolt V to get the item lock going as fast as possible. It seems Vikavolt V is certainly being overlooked by some players, despite the absurd strength of the item lock. It may be the underdog of the Darkness Ablaze set, but there is little doubt it will see tournament success in the future.

Eternatus V and V Max

Eternatus was the poster boy of Pokémon’s new trading card game set, so it makes sense that this card packs a punch. Eternatus V is a pretty average V card overall. It has a solid attack that allows for energy acceleration from the hand, but other than that, Eternatus V is nothing to write home about.

However, Eternatus V Max is nothing short of overpowering. Its ability allows the player to expand their bench size from five to eight cards. This ultimately benefits Eternatus V Max’s strong attack, which has the potential to do 270 damage for only two energy cards.

The card also benefits from good dark Pokémon such as Crobat V and Galarian Zigzagoon, which can be benched in high counts due to Eternatus’ ability. Eternatus’ strength is plain to see on paper, and there is little doubt it will wreak havoc in practice.

Crobat V

Easily the best card in the set, unlike cards like Centiskorch or Eternatus, Crobat V isn’t valuable because of its attack. Rather, it is so powerful due to its ability called Dark Asset, which allows the player to draw cards until they have six in their hand after benching Crobat. Many players will recognize that Shaymin EX from a couple of years ago had the same ability and it was a meta-defining card. Crobat V will be no different.

Most powerful about Crobat V right now is how strong it can be on top of other draw cards. Using both Crobat V and Dedenne GX in one turn can allow the player to move through an enormous portion of their deck in one go. Its versatility cannot be understated and pretty much every Poke’mon deck should at least try Crobat out. He won’t disappoint.
