Pokémon Adventure’s Yellow saga is surprisingly intense and does some inventive things with the new characters & why Red is out of the picture. Red’s return is immensely gratifying, but it leads to a rematch against Bruno that’s stressful from start to finish. It’s not the manga’s biggest fight, but what makes it special is that Red utilizes a Super Evolution Stone so that his Eevee can freely switch between its primary three evolutionary forms at will. It’s an amazing sight that was original for the manga and speaks to some of the more unique decisions that it explores.

9 Black Faces Pokémon He’s Never Seen Before Against Looker

Battles that take place within various Pokémon Leagues usually amount to some of the more exciting and challenging encounters. Early on in the Unova League in the Black & White chapters, Black faces off against the recurring Pokémon Adventures character, Looker. The fight stands out because Looker fights with a Croagunk, which Black has never encountered before since he’s new to Unova. Black can’t rely on his Pokédex for help, so it’s exciting because he has to think on his feet as he tries to determine Croagunk’s type class. Black’s Galvantula does win in the end.

8 Ruby And Sapphire Are Saved By Celebi

In Pokémon Adventures: Ruby & Sapphire’s epic showdown, Ruby and Sapphire face off against Maxie and Archie, who have the power of the Red and Blue Orbs to back them up. Ruby and Sapphire are about to face defeat until Ruby finally unleashes the one Poké Ball that he’s had for forever and doesn’t know what’s inside.

The contents are the Legendary Pokémon, Celebi, who easily resolves this matter when it destroys the orbs and brings back to life all of the recently lost lives. It’s a battle that’s less about strategy and works because of its surprising nature.

7 Black Fights Elesa On A Raging Roller Coaster

The Black & White chapters from Pokémon Adventures really feature some exceptional gym battles, but one of the most creative is Black’s showdown with the Lightning-Type leader of the Unova region, Elesa. Black fights Elesa for a badge, but what makes this battle particularly unique is that it’s set on a malfunctioning roller coaster. Elesa leads with her Zebstrika and Emolga, while Black stays in control with his Galvantula. It’s an exciting fight, both for the Pokémon involved and how the environment gets incorporated and actually makes a difference.

6 Cynthia’s Showdown With Cyrus Is Personal For Her And Her Pokémon

The Diamond & Pearl installments of Pokémon Adventures feature many of the dangers caused by Team Galactic. One of the more cathartic fights takes place between Cynthia, the Sinnoh Champion, and Team Galactic’s Leader, Cyrus, who ravaged her hometown. Cynthia and Cyrus both expertly use their Pokémon’s advantages to blindside each other and it’s especially powerful when Cynthia calls out her Garchomp, who stills remembers Cyrus from their last encounter and gets driven into a rage. Chaos continues to erupt and the two don’t even get to fully settle this score, which only creates more tension.

5 Magma Admin Blaise Creates Illusions To Trick Ruby

Pokémon Adventures: Omega Ruby & Alpha Sapphire’s chapters are so fulfilling because they highlight how much the Hoenn heroes have improved as trainers since their last appearance. Blaise isn’t even the leader of the Magma Admin Team, but it’s both a creative and complex battle.

Blaise gets into Ruby’s head by using his Slugma’s intense fire abilities to create illusions that throw off Ruby and his Marshtomp. The battle takes place on a submarine, so when Ruby uses Earthquake to finally win, it wrecks the sub and forces him to escape, which makes for a thrilling exit.

4 Black’s Rampage Of Revenge Against Cheren, N, And Ghetsis

The finale to the arcs in Pokémon Adventures are typically some of the most satisfying and biggest fights, but the first Black & White saga really makes a point to show how determined Black is to take out the negativity in the world. Black elegantly demonstrates how much he’s learned by defeating Cheren, taking out N’s Zekrom with his freshly acquired Reshiram, and then still challenging Ghetsis. Ghetsis is prepared and his entire team is curated to have advantages against Black’s party, yet Black still dominates the win.

3 Red Cripples The Head Of Team Rocket

Red’s infiltration and takedown of Team Rocket is highly satisfying. Red faces off against Giovanni and Red is able to pull off some really smart surprises, despite Giovanni’s smug nature. Red hides and unleashes Aerodactyl’s Poké Ball in a surprising way and Giovanni seems genuinely dangerous. The battle comes down to Red’s Pikachu against Giovanni’s four strongest Pokémon, yet Pikachu manages to knock them all out at once. Red’s strategy is that Pikachu has been charging his Thunderbolt attack in the Poké Ball for the entire fight and Red could withstand the electricity because of Lt Surge’s insulating gloves.

2 Red’s League Battle With Blue Shows They’re More Than Rivals

Pokémon Adventures covers each of the respective games, but there’s still a lot of weight behind the first run of comics that dig into the first generation of games and the adventures in the Kanto region. The culmination of this storyline puts Red in combat with Blue for Pokémon League Champion. Red pulls off some great tactics as he combines his Pokémon’s skills. Professor Oak points out how much the two have incorporated each other’s strategies into how they battle and they learn that they’re respectfully friends, not just rivals. Red’s win against Blue’s Charizard feels deeply earned.

1 Three Generation Of Trainers Unite Against Kyogre

The Emerald arc in Pokémon Adventures is truly incredible stuff and it’s extremely satisfying for anyone who has been there from the start. The final arc in Emerald involves hundreds of trainers locked in combat against corrupted Pokémon while Jirachi helps, but it’s the conclusion that really stands out. The nine trainers of the first three Pokémon generations all use their evolved starter Pokémon in combined Hyper attacks. Then each trainer’s resident Pikachu representative unite with a joint Volt Tackle. It’s pure beauty and it’s what’s necessary to take down the overwhelming Kyogre.
