Pokemon Adventures Red’s First 10 Battles In The Manga (In Chronological Order)

As the main character of Pokémon Adventures, Red has experienced his fair share of battles, most of which end up with him coming out on top. As he’s your typical plucky protagonist, that’s not all that surprising, nor should the fact he’s fought as often as he has. Almost every chapter in the series has one, titles following the standard Pokémon format that is familiar from the games and television series.

Some of these fights show the growth the character goes through as he’s smarter than he’s first inferred to be. There are also a few humbling battles where Red needs to be put into his place.

10 Nidorino

It’s hard to call it a true battle as Red was showing off how you catch a Pokemon to a group of kids who thought all you had to do was throw the Pokéball at them, much like Ash did in the original series. Red showed them that you have to weaken them first, which he did with his Poliwhirl’s Water Gun attack. After that, the Nidorino was easy pickings for the trainer to scoop up smugly. The easiest of the fight helped set him up for the failure that was soon to come.

9 Mew

This battle was a whitewash and one that needed to happen, given how smug and arrogant Red was being in the first chapter. He acted like he knew everything, that no one could ever touch him. He saw Blue battling Mew and swooped right in after he pulled back his Charmander, oblivious to the true strength of Mew. His Poliwhirl never had a chance, getting knocked out almost instantly after he was summoned, showing Red still had a lot to learn.

8 Machoke

After finding the last of Professor Oak’s escaped Pokémon, Red was attacked by a wild Machoke, who quickly knocked the Professor out. Forced to fight with a Pokémon Red did not know (Bulbasaur), he needed to improvise, defeating the Machoke on nothing more than a hunch.

He assumed that since the Bulbasaur had a bulb on his back, he’d be able to do an ability similar to Solar Beam, which ended up knocking out the Machoke.

7 Pikachu

For a character who is the mascot of the game series and a key member of the anime, it’s surprising that Pikachu wasn’t a starting Pokémon for Red. It’s even more surprising that he isn’t caught until the fourth chapter in the manga, in a fight that’s rather uneventful. Red has to step in as angry villagers are trying to capture Pikachu, using Bulbasaur’s Poison Powder to weaken the electric mouse enough to be captured, a feat Pikachu is none too pleased about.

6 Brock

On his way to Brock, Red blew through the preliminaries, taking out his foes in one shot, earning the interest of Brock as a worthy challenger. Little did he know that the reason Red was doing this was due to the exhaustion of his Poliwhirl and Bulbasaur was feeling, as well as the lack of training towards Pikachu. That unruliness came into play when Pikachu first got hit by Onyx attack. His anger turned onto Red rather than the opposing Pokemon. They managed to bond mid-fight, however, earning Red the boulder badge.

5 Gyarados

Misty and her Staryu were getting their butts handed to them by a Gyrados before Red showed up. He managed to buy enough time with his Bulbasaur to allow Staryu the chance to recover.

From there, the two of them used a Bubble Beam and Vine Whip combo attack to weaken the beast enough for Red to capture him. The battle got to show off how elemental advantages worked with Pokémon, showing how little damage a water attack does against a grass type.

4 Team Rocket

The Team Rocket from Pokemon Adventures isn’t as lovable as the goofs from the animated series, acting more like your typical henchman or goons. Red first battles them while both parties are searching for the Moon Stone. The battle centers around Pikachu vs Rhyhorn, where the ever bad-tempered mouse manages to gain a victory. The biggest takeaway from the fight is how Team Rocket can force evolutions on their Pokemon via a syringe, much like a form of steroids.

3 Misty

As is common in the series, Red often needs a fight to knock him down a peg or two as he often becomes quite full of himself. After his defeat of Team Rocket, he was feeling on top of the world, feeling he could beat anyone and impress the ladies in the process. That’s when Misty stepped in to let him know that he’s not undefeatable. Their duel is short, Starmie’s Bubble Beam knocking down both Red and Bulbasaur. All to remind Red that he needed to keep training.

2 Fearow

Fearow cropped up when Red ran into Bill, who’d been mutated into a partial Rattata thanks to a hiccup in his Pokemon Transporter. Before the two could be properly introduced, a Fearow swooped down to scoop up the Rattata for a meal. After Bulbasaur and Poliwhirl’s attack proved ineffective, he was forced to use Pikachu to bring the bird down to ground level. After that, some quick thinking allowed him to counter the bird’s attack and capture him.

1 Lt Surge

In Pokemon Adventure, Pokemon evolve for a variety of reasons, be it experimentation as Team Rocket does or battling to develop its skills. There is a third way as well, shown when Lt. Surge’s Electrobuzz tosses Red overboard. His Poliwhirl knows he can’t save Red in his current form, so he pushes himself toward evolution, becoming a Poliwrath in the process. In his evolved state, the Poliwrath saves Red and dominates Electrobuzz, tossing him into Lt. Surge with ease.
