Pokémon released a new 8-minute animated short that shines a whole new light on Generation IV’s Bidoof, a pocket monster famously maligned by players of the video game series.

Bidoof’s Big Stand tells the tale of a bumbling Bidoof who constantly feels out of place in her pack as she struggles to perform the most basic of tasks. After being attacked by a wild Staraptor and a horde of Starlys, the Bidoof’s life changes when a Pokémon trainer and his Lucario step in to save her. Upon seeing the high-five the Pokémon trainer and Lucario exchange, the Bidoof yearns to share a bond like that with someone and is thus caught. Much to the Bidoof’s disappointment, however, she is relegated to a life of performing basic functions for the trainer. She repeatedly clears obstacles such as rocks and ice so that his master’s journey can continue, never to see battle. This is reminiscent of the way players often use the Normal-type Pokémon in the games Diamond and Pearl.

Pokémon has become one of the highest-grossing media franchises of all time since its creation by Satoshi Tajiri in 1996. In the video games, trainers catch and train Pokémon to battle opponents and claim the title of Champion of the region. The Pokémon brand has grown exponentially since its launch, spawning several successful anime series, movies and a trading card game.

Bidoof’s Big Stand follows the recent launch of Pokémon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl which was released for the Nintendo Switch in 2021. The original Diamond and Pearl mark the first appearance of Bidoof, who has gone on to appear in every subsequent game in the franchise. Fans can also expect more Bidoof in the upcoming Pokémon Legends: Arceus as it will be set in Hisui, a province within the greater Sinnoh region. The game distances itself from the usual formula expected of a Pokémon game as players will be set loose into vast open-world areas to research and catch a variety of pocket monsters in an effort to build the world’s first Pokédex. While many familiar creatures will appear in Legends: Arceus, fans can also expect a healthy dose of new evolutions and regional variants.

Pokémon Legends: Arceus is set to be released on Jan. 28 exclusively for the Nintendo Switch.
