The most recent season of the Pokemon anime saw protagonist Ash Ketchum earning his first Pokemon League Championship in the Alola region. But, perhaps more importantly, the ending hinted that Ash’s run as the series’ main protagonist could be coming to an end. Leaked material for the new Pokemon season confirmed that Ash would be returning, but that a second protagonist would indeed be a part of the show. Today a new trailer for the anime introduced the new character, revealing his name.

In a decision that’s likely to be met with many a smirk and eyeroll, the new Pokemon anime character’s name is Go. The Pokemon Company and Niantic’s mobile game, Pokemon Go, being the obvious reference. It should be noted, however, that Go is for now only confirmed to be the name of this new protagonist in Japan. It’s possible that he’ll have a different name in the English dub of the new Pokemon series, like how Ash’s name in Japan is Satoshi.

With regards to the Pokemon Go mobile game, there’s clearly going to be a much deeper association with the character than just his name. It’s likely no coincidence that all of the art of Go shown in this new trailer has him holding a Rotom Phone, an in-universe cellphone. If the anime represents the greater Pokemon franchise, Ash represents the main series and Go represents Pokemon Go. With Pokemon Go’s popularity skyrocketing, it only makes sense to let both protagonist’s share the screen.

It is an interesting choice, however, to have Go’s Pokemon be a Scorbunny. Scorbunny being one of the new Galar Region starter Pokemon in Pokemon Sword and Pokemon Shield. To be fair, Pokemon Go doesn’t have any original Pokemon, but it’s still somewhat odd to give Go a Pokemon that won’t actually be added to the mobile game for a very long time. It is an interesting way to tie Go into the ongoing Pokemon anime continuity, however.

Relatively little is still known about Go and the new Pokemon anime series. According to the new trailer, Go’s goal is to catch all Pokemon, while Ash Ketchum’s new goal is to battle. This is a rather significant shift for the anime in its own right, as Ash has previously been associated with the “Gotta Catch ‘Em All” motto of the anime. The new anime will also apparently be visiting all of the Pokemon franchise’s regions, perhaps as part of Go’s effort to catch all Pokemon.

Expect more information on the new Pokemon anime in the weeks to come.
