Pokémon Ashs Companions Ranked By Intelligence

Ash Ketchum’s vapidness often gets called out in the anime. In one episode, when Beheeyem takes control of the minds of several people, Ash and Team Rocket remain unaffected because they are “idiots.” Ash often relies on his companions for insights on Pokémon battling and general trivia.

Indeed, Ash’s companions continuously prove how smart and knowledgeable they are. They help the boy with battle strategies and Pokémon trivia and contribute to his growth as both a person and a Trainer. And while all his companions contribute something valuable to his journey, some outrank others in the smarts department.

10 Dawn

Dawn starts her journey as an overconfident girl who thinks there’s not much left for her to learn. As she travels around Sinnoh with Ash and Brock, she discovers new ways to train and care for her Pokémon. She takes the best from both her companions and incorporates their strategies and advice into her training style.

Once, when separated from the two boys and with her Mamoswine hurt, she successfully recalls Brock’s teachings and heals her injured Pokémon. By the end of her journey, Dawn is more mature and knowledgeable than ever, displaying the same confidence but with all the experience of a real Pokémon trainer.

9 Max

Max is a bit of a know-it-all. He dominates Pokémon theory, having read multiple books about Pokémon, and enjoys correcting others, often providing uncalled for criticism. However, he lacks any real training experience, mainly because he’s still too young to have any Pokémon of his own.

During his journey, he bonds and learns a great deal from Brock. Max also does a lot of growing up, becoming less immature and more respectful of other’s experiences. When he eventually becomes a Trainer, there’s no doubt he’ll be one of the best.

8 Goh

Like Dawn, Goh is still a Trainer in the making. Analytical and observant, Goh possesses a great deal of knowledge about Pokémon behavior. However, his lack of experience makes him commit rookie mistakes, like throwing PokéBalls at any Pokémon that crosses his way. Goh also has considerable detective abilities that come in handy while journeying with Ash.

Despite his strengths, Goh is very naïve. For example, he wanted the mythical Pokémon Mew to serve as his Starter, even rejecting the Starters of his home region, Galar.

7 Iris

Iris is the definition of “street smarts.” She’s highly perceptive and can sense danger even when others can’t. She’s also a seasoned trainer and was even considered a prodigy in the Village of Dragons. She was even on a 99-win streak before finally being defeated. Her game counterpart serves as Unova’s Champion in Black 2 & White 2, further reinforcing her reputation.

Iris is, however, not free of flaws. She often criticizes Ash for being a rookie trainer, even when she makes the same mistakes he does. Her goal is to become a Dragon Master, and while she has plenty of theoretical knowledge of the type, she seems to lack practical one.

6 Lillie

Lillie, one of Ash’s classmates in the Alola region, is initially terrified of Pokémon. Her fear makes her freeze when a Pokémon approaches her, and she actively avoids them. Once she overcomes her fear, she becomes eager to interact with them in as many ways as possible.

Lillie is a young Pokémon Professor. She’s highly educated in the Alola region and its Pokémon and enjoys writing about her findings in her diary. Lillie is also an avid photographer, and embarks on regular research trips accompanied by her sole Pokémon, an Alolan Vulpix named Snowie.

5 Misty

As the Cerulean City Gym Leader, Misty has unparalleled knowledge about Water-type Pokémon. She’s also an admirable Trainer who takes advantage of her surroundings to create original battle strategies.

Misty wasn’t always a confident Trainer, though. When she first meets Ash, she lives under the shadow of her three older sisters and is looking for her own identity, both as a person and as a Trainer. After traveling around Kanto and Johto with Ash and Brock, she returns to Cerulean Gym, ready to take full ownership of her Gym Leader title. Misty dominates her type specialty, making her one of Ash’s most impressive companions.

4 Tracey

Tracey, like Brock, has ample knowledge about Pokémon behavior. As a Pokémon Watcher, Tracey also has heightened senses that allow him to anticipate a Pokémon’s move before it performs it. He’s also perceptive of things that others can ignore, like Pokémon’s heights and weights. His unnaturally privileged eyesight allows him to spot subtle details, like the differences between each Nurse Joy.

Tracey’s main idol is Professor Oak. As of Pokémon Journeys, Tracey is still serving as Oak’s assistant. The Professor has shown considerable appreciation for Tracey’s contributions, proving how bright he is.

3 Sophocles

As one of Ash’s classmates in Alola, Sophocles gets many chances to prove his intelligence. He’s a young inventor who often pays more attention to his inventions than his surroundings. He specializes in Electric-type Pokémon and keeps his Togedemaru outside its PokéBall.

Sophocles also enjoys collecting information and data about all sorts of things. He gets bashful whenever someone compliments him about his intelligence, although he goes to great lengths to defend his creations when others criticize them.

2 Brock

For four seasons, Brock was the anime’s resident encyclopedia. He knows almost everything there is about Pokémon care and breeding. He also has unique insights about Pokémon battling and can easily anticipate a Trainer’s strategies.

Brock usually acts as an older brother to his companions, offering helpful advice and guidance. He’s wise and levelheaded and carries all sorts of books and maps with him, making him the group’s de-facto leader. As of Pokémon Journeys, Brock is training to become a Pokémon doctor, which will only increase his already vast field of knowledge.

1 Clemont

Because of his place as a Gym Leader, Clemont knows a lot about Pokémon. He specializes in Electric-types, but he commonly displays general knowledge about Pokémon as a whole. More importantly, Clemont is also extremely smart and has a wide array of inventions he intends to use to improve human-Pokémon relationships.

Clemont’s devices, referred to as the Clemontic Gear in the anime, always do what he wants but most only last for a few minutes before malfunctioning in some way. Still, numerous of his gadgets are fully functional, like the famous Aipom Arm he uses to pull Bonnie away when she embarrasses him, or the Clembot, a robot he built to take over Lumiose Gym while he focused on his work.
