Pokémon BDSP How To Get The Black Belt (& What It Does)

In Pokémon Brilliant Diamond & Shining Pearl, players can get a Black Belt for their Pokémon as a held item to provide passive benefits in battle. In addition, there are many items throughout Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl that provide type-specific boosts to the base power of a Pokémon move. For example, the Odd Incense in Pokémon BDSP provides a 20% boost to Psychic-type physical and special attacks.

One of the best parts of these type-attack boosting items is that they stack with the same attack type bonus, more commonly known as STAB. STAB activates automatically when a Pokémon uses a move that matches the Pokémon’s type and boosts its power by 50%. It’s an incredible bonus that allows a Pokémon, like Alakazam, to boost its Psychic attack power from a base damage of 90 to 135. When Alakazam holds an Odd Incense, Psychic is boosted even further to a base damage of 162. The Black Belt provides a similar effect in Pokémon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl, but for Fighting-type Pokémon.

The best competitive Fighting-type Pokémon in BDSP can make the most of the Black Belt because it provides a 20% boost to all Fighting-type moves. Normal-, Ice-, Rock-, Dark-, and Steel-type Pokémon all receive 2x damage from Fighting-type moves. So if a Fighting-type Pokémon uses a Fighting-type move on any of these kinds while holding a Black Belt, it can deal 160% of that move’s base damage. For example, Aura Sphere normally deals 80 base damage, but if used by a Lucario with all of these power-ups in play, Aura Sphere will suddenly deal 288 damage.

Black Belt Location in Pokémon Brilliant Diamond & Shining Pearl

In Pokémon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl, the only way to receive a Black Belt is by meeting the requests of a particular NPC. On Route 221, players will find a lone house with a blue roof and a single NPC inside. Every day, this character requests to see a Pokémon on any level at random between one and 100. While players do not need to have the Pokémon BDSP National Dex to visit this man, they need to use the move Surf outside of battle. Unfortunately, this means this area is off-limits until players beat Fantina, the Hearthome City Gym Leader.

In addition to the Black Belt, this NPC will also gift trainers an Expert Belt and a Focus Sash. While this is the only place where players can get an Expert Belt, the Focus Sash is also available for 15 BP in the Battle Tower exchange counter. The NPC does give each of these items in a specific order, beginning with the Black Belt and ending with the Focus Sash. He doesn’t require players to complete these challenges daily, but only one item can be earned once a day, and the next item cannot be earned until players receive the previous item in Pokémon BDSP.
