Pokemon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl players are diving back into the Sinnoh region to find it much as they left it. The art direction may have gone further than some like, but there’s no real denying that these are faithful remakes of Pokemon Diamond and Pearl. Indeed, even the few new additions in the game go a long way in serving the core identity of the games.

That’s not to say that it’s perfect though, as it has a few headscratchers in the game. One, for example, is Pokemon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl’s release date effectively blocking players from getting an early timed event Drifloon. Another has to do with a small glitch impacting Pokemon nicknames.

For example, as pointed out by Redditor Raida-Kick, a Pokemon nicknamed “Egg” will be treated as an egg by in-game text. Raid-Kick clarifies that the Pokemon works properly in Pokemon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl, but the in-game text will add an article “the” and refer to the Pokemon as “the Egg.” It’s quite hilarious to think about, with Raida-Kick providing an example as seen below, but many in the comments were quick to point out nickname glitches they also encountered.

One user posted an image of their un-nicknamed Geodude evolving into Graveler, but the text had changed its nickname to Knife, resulting in the phrase of “Your Knife has evolved into Graveler!” Another says their Lickitung was nicknamed “Sir Slurp” but was referred to as “Playdoh” in the game text. Others discussed how their Pokemon’s names were in Japanese. Here, specifically, it seems that evolution when in the Grand Underground is swapping name files with players somehow.

Overall, it’s a pretty odd glitch, but it doesn’t seem to be doing any real harm to Pokemon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl players. These reports indicate that the name change isn’t permanent and only happens in rare instances, although the text issue with an Egg is something else entirely. It appears to be an issue, in both cases, with how in-game text understands and utilizes nicknames/Pokemon names, but again, it’s not actually changing them or impacting them in any means.

This means players can go about using the Grand Underground, evolving and nicknaming their Pokemon, completing their Pokedex, and beating the Elite Four without worry that their beloved Geodude’s nickname will be permanently changed to Knife.

Pokemon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl are available now on Switch.
