It had been rumored for some time that the Pokémon Company and Nintendo could be working on a reboot/remake of the classic Nintendo DS games Diamond and Pearl. In celebration of their 25th anniversary, the company held a special live stream announcing some of their upcoming events, projects, and games.

Amongst the reveals came the news that Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl would be the latest Pokémon games to be revisited from the company’s history. This was certainly an exciting announcement for fans who are nostalgic for their past stories, but this also offers up a hint of what may be to come in the Pokémon franchise’s future.

10 Slowing Down On Original Titles

In the long term, Nintendo may be looking to slow down on the release of newer Pokémon titles, in order to continue to have longevity with the brand. Granted, the company has looked to other studios in order to expand how many titles they can release each year.

While Game Freak is the usual candidate for developing games in the franchise, Nintendo have turned to ILCA for the highly anticipated 2021 Diamond and Pearl remakes. Perhaps Nintendo is looking for a dual-brand approach with remakes helping to slow the need for brand new content.

9 Taking Risks

Pokémon has absolutely taken risks in the past, but the last few years have shown that the company is ready to take their franchise to a new level. In fact, they have been looking at all sorts of ways to rejuvenate the brand and take fans in a new direction.

The ground-breaking release of Pokémon Go is a great example of Nintendo and Niantic thinking outside of the box and with upcoming open-world titles, alongside the idea of bringing back class games from the company’s past, Nintendo is happy to continue to take big risks.

8 Nostalgic Releases

Of course, this may also be a sign of what’s to come in terms of bringing back the nostalgia for fans who have been with the franchise for so long. Other companies have often profited off this sense of nostalgia in the video game world, but Pokémon rarely capitalizes on it.

In the next year alone the company will be looking at creating versions of Pokémon Snap as well as Diamond and Pearl. That’s already three different titles getting the nostalgic re-run treatment and there’s really no reason for Nintendo to stop there, considering fans love replaying old games.

7 Revitalizing Old Generations

It’s fair to say that recent generations of Pokémon have left a lot to be desired. The designs of these newer characters just haven’t lived up to what the franchise has achieved in the past and have left some asking the question as to whether Nintendo and Game Freak are out of ideas.

By brushing off some older generations of Pokémon, ones that have already proven to be popular amongst players, some goodwill is restored with the brand. What’s more by revitalizing some of these older Pokémon, may provide the key to what’s missing in newer designs, therefore, fixing the problems from modern games.

6 Heading Back To Old Anime

If the games are going back in time then it could well be that the anime series will be doing the same. Usually, the TV show and movies evolve with the release of the video games, with Ash continuing on his adventures to each new region uncovered.

However, if the games are now trying to take a step back and reminisce about old times, then maybe the Pokémon anime can do the same. Characters like Dawn were wildly popular at the time and some of Ash’s best Pokémon happened to come from the Sinnoh region.

5 Other Reboots

It’s already been previously mentioned but Pokémon Snap will also be revitalized. There’s a big difference between a remake and a reboot though. It seems for now that Diamond and Pearl will be receiving a remake; simply improving the graphics and some of the gameplay mechanics, updating the product for Nintendo Switch.

Pokémon Snap on the other hand is more of a reboot, with the core idea being completely recreated for the new platform, with a different story and different visuals. While plenty of remakes could be in the works for Nintendo, if Diamond and Pearl do well, perhaps it will open the idea up to other reboots as well in order to vary the release of nostalgic content.

4 New Prequels

One of the interesting things about Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl is that its announcement also coincided with the reveal of the open-world game on Nintendo Switch, Pokémon Legends: Arceus. This story is a completely original one being developed by Game Freak.

What’s unique about this is that it actually serves as a prequel to the stories of Diamond and Pearl taking place years before and tracking the history of the Sinnoh Region. Perhaps future remakes could also be accompanied by a prequel as well.

3 Compelling Sequels

While direct sequels for the Pokémon games are not that common an occurrence, it’s safe to say that as the company looks to expand its titles and potentially works on more prequels, that sequels could also be just around the corner. Indeed, fans are already eagerly anticipating a big-screen sequel to Pokémon’s live-action debut.

Each game has had its own unique story with a natural arc and conclusion but very rarely is this continued into a second game. With Nintendo revisiting classics like Diamond and Pearl perhaps there is a way to look past that narrative and continue on the adventure, maybe as a gym leader themselves!

2 Interactive Titles

Titles have been interactive with one another in the past. From trading Pokémon across consoles to catching them on Pokémon Go and moving them into the mainline games, Nintendo has always been very forward-thinking about how gamers can use their products.

With the Nintendo Switch looking like the company’s main console for years to come, more and more Pokémon titles are making their debut on the platform. There may be an opportunity here for a new level of interaction between the different games that have never been seen on this scale before; from Snap to Go and from Legends: Arceus to Diamond and Pearl, maybe there’s a way to trade and battle amongst them all!

1 Overarching Story

The 25th anniversary of Pokémon is a momentous occasion and one that definitely deserves some reflection. One thing that the franchise has not done so much is having a much larger overarching story across all of their games. This is to make sure each of their titles is accessible to new players.

Indeed, even the anime show resets a little with each new region and season, although does have some much larger continuity. Perhaps the games can build to a story that somehow involves all of the regions and the company’s past; hence why Nintendo is now bringing new players up to date on previous releases.
