This is part 13 of our official Pokemon Brilliant Diamond & Shining Pearl complete guide and walkthrough, which picks up right after you beat Byron in Canalave Gym and are tasked with meeting Professor Rowan in Canalave Library. Shortly after this, you’ll need to make your way to Lake Valor and battle Saturn for the first time.

I mean, the library part is pretty self-explanatory, right? You already walked right past it after taking on your rival on the bridge in the last part of the walkthrough, so now all you have to do is go in and head up to the top floor, where Rowan, your rival, and either Lucas or Dawn will be waiting for you. At this point in the story, Rowan makes it clear that the three of you need to visit Lake Verity, Lake Valor, and Lake Acuity for him in order to investigate the Lake Guardians of Sinnoh. Your rival takes Acuity, you’re assigned Valor, and Rowan accompanies his assistant to Verity.

Right before you leave the library, a tremor hits Canalave with ferocious force. When you make your way down the stairs and back out to the city, you’ll soon be informed that a bomb has gone off at Lake Valor, meaning it’s even more urgent that you get there as soon as possible.

It’s worth pointing out at this stage that you can go catch a Gible now if you’re planning on adding Garchomp to your team. I mean, a bomb did just go off there – surely Gible can wait, right?

Fly to Veilstone City and head south via Route 214 until you get to the entrance to Lake Valor, which is now unguarded for the first time. When you go inside, you’ll see that all of the water has evaporated as a result of the explosion. There are lots of Magikarp pathetically flailing about the ground, which is… a bit sad, if I’m honest. Still, it’s essential you make your way to the cavern at the centre of the now waterless lake, so your sympathy can wait.

There are quite a few grunts you can battle here, none of whom are particularly strong. It’s pretty easy experience and you won’t need to waste a whole lot of PP on them, so we’d recommend quickly incapacitating the lot of them before heading in to fight Saturn in the cave. While his Toxicroak isn’t quite as intimidating as Mars’ and Jupiter’s Purugly and Skuntank, his Kadabra and Bronzor are way tougher than their grunt Pokemon, which makes Saturn arguably the toughest of the three on aggregate. Your best bet here is to send in your fastest ‘mon to hit Kadabra hard and hopefully one-shot it. Afterwards, take out Toxicroak with Staraptor and Bronzor with either Infernape, Rapidash, or – thanks to the Grand Underground adding more than one Fire-type to the games – any other decent Fire Pokemon you caught in a Hideaway.

Once you’ve given Saturn a good thrashing and told him how rubbish his haircut is, you’ll quickly learn that your pals are having a bit of a nightmare down at Lake Verity. For the first time in a long time, you need to head all the way back to your hometown of Twinleaf, which isn’t quite as daunting as it sounds given that you can Fly there in approximately two seconds. After you arrive, head north to Lake Verity and reconvene with Rowan and either Lucas or Dawn.
