Pokemon Brilliant Diamond & Shining Pearl Celestic Town And Fantina Guide

This is part 11 of our official Pokemon Brilliant Diamond & Shining Pearl complete guide and walkthrough, which picks up after you defeat Pastoria Gym’s Crasher Wake and figure out a way to move the Psyduck blocking the northern part of Route 210. Next on the agenda is making your way to Celestic Town and finally taking on Fantina’s Gym in Hearthome City.

There are quite a few things you should make sure you’ve done before heading all the way back to Route 210. First, make sure you’ve explored The Great Marsh and caught any of the Pokemon you want to add to your main party. Second, you’ll need to ensure you’ve obtained the HM for Defog, as the northern stretches of Route 210 are, well… foggy. And third, you can optionally venture over to Route 212 to the west of Pastoria City if that’s something you feel like doing.

To expand on that last point, there are plenty of trainers on Route 212 who you can farm to level up your Pokemon, while Pichu and Pikachu are catchable in the Pokemon Mansion’s Trophy Garden. Personally, I don’t bother with Route 212 because it doesn’t have any Pokemon I want to catch and my team is generally already sufficiently high-leveled to take on Fantina, but it’s up to you. Regardless of your decision, you can’t face the next Gym until you go to Celestic Town, so that’s what we’re going to focus on here.

The fastest way to reach Celestic Town from your current location is to Fly straight to Solaceon Town and head north to Route 210. When you approach the Psyduck obstructing the path and give them the Secret Medicine, they will slowly but surely disperse into the grass ahead of you. The next section features a patch of unusually tall grass that you can’t cycle through, which is home to a trio of hidden ninja trainers. You can avoid them if you want, but as always, it’s best to take them on for easy experience.

The next section will see you reach a foggy area. Take out your Poketch by pressing R, hold R down to expand the screen, and either click the right stick or the red button on the right of the device to scroll through to the hidden moves app. Select Defog to clear the air and continue on your merry way to Celestic Town. This area may seem pretty dense, but realistically all you need to do is swing a left and keep going until you see two flights of stairs. Walk up them, follow the bridges until you see a karate man standing on a platform above a bird keeper, and then head back down the stairs and across one final bridge to Celestic Town.

Once you arrive here, you need to locate Cynthia’s grandmother, who is standing in the southern part of the village. She’ll tell you that a Galactic grunt is threatening to detonate a bomb in the ruins below – naturally your job is to go and show him what’s what. Once you’ve thoroughly thrashed him, Cynthia’s grandmother will thank you for your help and reward you with the HM for Surf. With that out of the way, it’s time to Fly to Hearthome City and take on Fantina.

When you go into Fantina’s Gym, head towards the lift at the back of the room. The gimmick of this gym is that you can avoid any battles by correctly answering four questions – answer wrong, however, and a trainer will come out to punish you. At this point in the game, it really depends on whether or not you need the experience. If you’ve been following the walkthrough so far, you’ll probably know I always recommend fighting every single trainer you see, but also, Fantina came into the game several hours ago and it’s totally understandable if you just want to get this gym out of the way. If that’s the case, here are the questions and answers:

  • Q: What is 3 plus 5 plus 7?
  • A: 15, take the door on the right.
  • Q: What is 12 plus 28?
  • A: 40, take the door straight ahead of you.
  • Q: What is 3 times 13?
  • A: 39, take the door on the left.
  • Q: What was the first room’s answer?
  • A: 15, take the door on the right.

After correctly answering these questions, you’ll eventually reach Fantina. Unlike Maylene and Wake, both of whom had a level 30 Pokemon as their ace, Fantina’s Mismagius is level 36. Because of this, it’s possible that you might struggle with this gym battle, especially if you’re not used to dealing with Ghost-type Pokemon. Our advice if you’re having a hard time would be to train on Route 211 or 212 until your party are the same level as Mismagius, if not even higher. Also remember that Pokemon like Houndoom, Luxray, and Gyarados can do quite a lot of damage here with Crunch.

Now that you’ve picked yourself up a Relic Badge and can effectively use Surf outside of battle, it’s time to move on to part 12 of our official Pokemon Brilliant Diamond & Shining Pearl walkthrough: Canalave City and how to beat Byron.
