Pokemon Brilliant Diamond & Shining Pearl Elite Four Aaron Guide

This is part 21 of our official Pokemon Brilliant Diamond & Shining Pearl complete guide and walkthrough, which picks up right after you beat your rival for the final time at the entrance to the Pokemon League. Now that you’re finally eligible to take on the Elite Four in earnest, it’s time for you to face your first opponent: Aaron.

Specialising in Bug-type Pokemon, this guy might not seem very threatening at first glance, especially given Pokemon’s storied history with Bug Catchers. When you consider the fact that his best Pokemon isn’t even Bug-type, though, it quickly becomes apparent that Aaron isn’t particularly like all those lads knocking about Eterna Forest.

Here’s the team Aaron uses the first time you face him in Pokemon Brilliant Diamond & Shining Pearl:

  • Dustox level 53
  • Beautifly level 53
  • Vespiquen level 54
  • Heracross level 54
  • Drapion level 57

Aside from Drapion, you could theoretically sweep Aaron’s team with an Infernape, a Rapidash, a Staraptor, or various other decently powerful Fire- or Flying-type Pokemon from the Grand Underground’s Hideaways. None of his Pokemon are particularly fast or bulky, so provided you’ve trained your team to a decent level, this fight really shouldn’t be too difficult until the end.

Aaron’s ace is truly his most powerful weapon. Drapion’s typing means that it’s only weak to Ground moves, and while it’s damaged normally by a whopping 12 other types, its monstrous Defense stat of 110 makes it capable of tanking just about anything you throw at it. Combine this with a respectable Speed stat of 95 and its access to STAB Cross-Poison and you’ll soon realise that you’re up against a stone cold killer.

My advice for taking down Aaron’s Drapion is to send out your heaviest Special Attacker and hit it with all you’ve got. As long as you’re not using Psychic, Poison, Dark, Ghost, or Grass attacks, you’ll deal at least neutral damage to it. Given that its Special Defense of 75 pales in comparison to that stalwart Defense stat mentioned above, it’s only natural that you should be aiming to hit it where it hurts.

All in all, the only ‘mons you really need to take down Aaron are one powerful Fire- or Flying-type Pokemon and a hard-as-nails Special Attacker. After this match, Fire and Flying moves are only super-effective against another three Pokemon each throughout the entire rest of the Elite Four, so theoretically speaking you don’t necessarily need both – especially given that all six ‘mons in question are dual-types that have other weaknesses you can exploit.

Meanwhile, candidates for the Special Attacker slot include Dialga, Palkia, Magnezone, Magmortar, Lucario, Alakazam, Gengar, Empoleon, and Infernape. Dialga and Palkia both learn Earth Power at level 60, if you’re willing to put the time into raising them.

That’s pretty much all you need to know to take on Aaron. Just make sure you only bring a maximum of two Pokemon who are necessary for this fight, as you still need to reserve other slots in your party for the next four battles.

Speaking of which, it’s time to move on to part 22 of our complete Pokemon Brilliant Diamond & Shining Pearl walkthrough: how to beat Elite Four Bertha.
