While some of the Pokemon in Pokemon Brilliant Diamond and Pokemon Shining Pearl are able to learn the Energy Ball move by leveling up, that is not the case with absolutely all of them. Indeed, players will need to use an Energy Ball TM to teach the move to certain Pokemon, and there are a few ways to go about obtaining one. As a TM, the move Energy Ball can be taught to not only Grass-type Pokemon, but other types as well including Fire-type Pokemon. While some Pokemon learn Energy Ball through leveling up, other Pokemon are not as lucky and need to be taught via TM. In Brilliant Diamond & Shining Pearl, there are various ways to get TM53 Energy Ball. This guide has been updated to include a list of Pokemon that benefit well from learning Energy Ball.

Pokemon Brilliant Diamond & Shining Pearl: Where to Get Energy Ball TM

For those players that are looking for a free Energy Ball TM, the first step is to head to Route 226. Upon entering this area, Pokemon BDSP fans should Rock Climb up the wall to the right, go right and Rock Climb down, and then go right again and Rock Climb back up. Players should now climb the stairs to the right, pass between the two Trainers, and Rock Climb down to find a ball containing TM53.

If a fan has already used up their free Energy Ball TM, then they may want to consider purchasing one from the Exchange Service Corner in the Battle Park in Pokemon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl. This TM does not come cheap, though, and players will need 64 BP before they can buy it. For the uninitiated, this special currency is earned by winning fights in the Battle Tower, and fans will need to spend quite a lot of time there if they hope to pickup TM53 from the Exchange Service Corner.

Players should know that the surefire ways to get TM53 are locked in the postgame. Route 226 and the Battle Tower won’t become available until players are invited to the Battle Zone after beating Champion Cynthia.

Alternatively, players can try to buy the Energy Ball TM from a Sphere Trader in Pokemon BDSP’s Grand Underground, though that is not always an easy thing to do. This difficulty is due to the fact that the inventories of these traders change everyday, and thus TM53 may not always be available. That said, players that check in with the Sphere Traders somewhat regularly should eventually come across an Energy Ball TM.

Regardless of how a player ultimately obtains TM53, they should teach the move to their preferred Pokemon when it is possible to do so. This will allow the selected Pokemon to use Energy Ball in battle, giving them the ability to lower an opponent’s Special Defense. Being able to perform this type of debuff can prove to be quite useful, and players should definitely consider putting some time toward tracking down this TM in Pokemon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl.

As a move, Energy Ball has 100% Accuracy, 10 PP, and 80 Power. If players use a PP Up item, then Energy Ball’s uses can grow from 10 to 16.

Brilliant Diamond & Shining Pearl: Pokemon That Should Learn Energy Ball

Just because a Grass-type Pokemon can learn Grass-type moves doesn’t mean it can learn Energy Ball naturally by leveling up. Pokemon like Leafeon, whose learnset is built mostly of Physical moves, can’t learn Energy Ball, but it can learn it via TM. However, because Leafeon’s a Physical Attacker, it may be better to save TM53 for another Pokemon.

Ironically, Fire-type Pokemon such as Vulpix and Ninetales can learn Energy Ball. Psychic-types like Gardevoir and Gallade can also learn Energy Ball through TM.

As a Grass-type move, Energy Ball won’t grant STAB to Pokemon like Ninetales or Gardevoir. However, Energy Ball can be useful for a Pokemon like Ninetales because of Ninetales’ weakness to Water, Ground, and Rock-type Pokemon. Giving Pokemon more coverage by sacrificing a move that grants STAB can sometimes be beneficial. Compare a Ninetales with three Fire-type moves in its moveset to a Ninetales with two Fire-type moves and Energy Ball. The Ninetales with Energy Ball has a chance of dealing super effective damage to a Pokemon that can target its Water/Ground/Rock weakness.

When using TMs like Energy Ball, its always best to see what Pokemon they want to teach the move to. If a Pokemon has low Special Attack, then it may not be worth teaching Energy Ball because Energy Ball is a Special move. Always check if a Pokemon will learn Energy Ball via leveling to avoid wasting a TM53. Finally, see if knowing Energy Ball can grant coverage. While it may be nice for Leafeon to know Energy Ball, Ninetales/Vulpix could make much better use of the move thanks to its Typing.
