The Sinnoh region of Pokemon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl was the first to introduce Magmortar to the ever-growing list of Pokemon. Magmortar is evolved from Magmar, who evolves from its baby form, Magby.

There can be some convoluted ways to evolve in Pokemon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl, and unfortunately getting Magmar to evolve into Magmortar requires some grinding and a very specific method. Players can find out exactly how to evolve Magmar into Magmortar by following this guide.

How to Get Magby in Pokemon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl

Magby is exclusive to Pokemon Shining Pearl, and can be found in the Volcanic Cave, Typhlo Cavern, and Sandsear Cave areas of the Grand Underground. There are no wild Magmars or Magmortars to catch, so this is the first step in acquiring all of its evolution chain.

Brilliant Diamond players can add Magby to their Pokedex by trading with another player. The baby Pokemon can then be leveled up to 30 and evolved in order to get Magmar’s Pokedex entry. However, to evolve Magmar into Magmortar, a particular item must be obtained.

To evolve Magmar into Magmortar, players must trade a Magmar holding a Magmarizer. To get a Magmarizer, players must head back to the Volcanic Cave, Typhlo Cavern, and Sandsear Cave areas of the Grand Underground in Shining Pearl to encounter a Magby holding one. Players can capture a Magby holding it, or use a move like Thief to obtain the item.

Note that there is only a 5% chance that a Magby will have Magmarizer, so it can take a while to acquire the held item. Thankfully, players can see which Pokemon are roaming in the Grand Underground, so can avoid other encounters that could take up even more time in the grind for a Magmarizer.

Once a Magmarizer held item in Pokemon Shining Pearl is acquired from a Magby, simply equip it to a Magmar, and then trade that Pokemon with another player either locally or online. Make sure it’s somebody that players can trust, however, as that person will have to trade Magmortar back, once it has evolved on their system.

The Magmarizer is only needed for the purposes of evolving a Magmar into a Magmortar, so players only need to search for the item once, unless they desire more than one. As the process can take a while, Magmortar is a desirable Pokemon to bargain with when trading, and spares of it could lead to some hard-to-find trades.
