Following their reveal earlier this year during the Pokemon 25th Anniversary Event, players can now return to the Sinnoh region as the remakes Pokemon Brilliant Diamond & Shining Pearl are available now. Both games raithfully recreate the 2006 Nintendo DS titles, keeping the core gameplay and story intact, while also providing a new visual engine to power the experience, plus some new features like the brand new Ramanas Park.

As a remake, longtime players will likely recall many familiar elements such as the classic Hidden Move, or HM abilities. These HM/TM abilities include moves like Strength, Cut, Fly, and many others which allow trainers to progress across the Sinnoh Region. These HM moves can be acquired throughout the length of the adventure, with some, like Waterfall, being earned towards the end of the game’s storyline.

Even though it is a late-game mechanic, Waterfall is incredibly important for map traversal and reaching new areas. Here’s how Pokemon Brilliant Diamond & Shining Pearl players can acquire the Waterfall HM.

Where to Get Waterfall

Before getting their hands on Waterfall, players will need to be pretty far along in the game’s journey. In fact, Waterfall can’t be found until players defeat the final gym leader, Volkner of the Sunyshore City Gym. He’s an electric-type Pokemon trainer, so players will need to make sure they have plenty of Pokemon that can counter those types of moves. One thing to keep in mind is that Volkner’s Pokemon know moves that can specifically counter ground types, so they may not be the best option for this fight as they normally would.

Once Gym Leader Volkner is taken care of and the eighth badge earned, players should head north to the Sunyshore City beach where they’ll find a girl named Jasmine. When players show her the Beacon Badge, she’ll hand over the Waterfall HM, allowing it to be used.

It’s worth noting that Waterfall can be obtained from Jasmine prior to defeating Volkner. However, doing so only allows it to be used as a Technical Machine, basically an attacking style move. The HM version of Waterfall remains locked until the 8th badge is obtained.

What Does Waterfall Do?

Waterfall is both a traversal and attack type move. It allows players to swim up waterfalls, thereby reaching new unexplored areas as well as giving the player access to Victory Road and the Elite Four. Unlike the original DS games, Pokemon Brilliant Diamond & Shining Pearl do not require players to teach any Pokemon this move in order to use it within the overworld. It instead is registered to the Poketch app, making it available whenever needed. The nice part about this is that players don’t have take up a move spot for a Pokemon in order to use it, letting them kep movesets diversified.

However, the option is there should players want to use it as an attack move. As expected, this is a Water-type move that causes 80 physical damage to an enemy. It’s an attack that never misses thanks to it’s 100 accuracy rating but only has 15 PP, so it can’t be used a ton without being recharged. Better yet, it also has a chance of causing enemies to flinch so it’s a solid move overall.
