Pokémon Brilliant Diamond & Shining Pearl Where to Get Every Fishing Rod

Fishing has been a staple in every mainline Pokémon game since the beginning, with the mechanic appearing in every main series game from Red, Blue and Yellow right through to Sword and Shield. In the other Generation VIII games, players are given a single rod that can catch everything. However, the older games took a tiered approach to fishing, locking certain Pokémon behind different rods. As faithful remakes, Pokémon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl follow the example of the original Generation IV games.

To catch them all, players will need to acquire the three Fishing Rods from specific Fishermen across the Sinnoh region, as some Pokémon can only be found within rivers and lakes. Once a rod is obtained, simply stand near a body of water and select the rod from the Key Items section of the bag. When an exclamation point flashes above the player, press the A button to reel it in and start a battle. Here’s where players will be able to find the three rods in Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl.

Once players reach Jubilife City, they will be able to obtain the first fishing rod. Head West from the TV Station to the checkpoint building that connects Jubilife City with Route 218. The Fisherman inside will hand over the Old Rod so long as the player answers “yes” to his question. With Old Rod, players can catch Magikarp — and that’s it. With perseverance, though, that Magikarp will turn into a powerful Gyarados. However, players hoping to catch anything else will need a better rod.

The next fishing rod is gifted by a Fisherman just outside of Hearthome City on Route 209. Exit the City’s southeast checkpoint and head to the right. There’s a Fisherman standing at the end of a pier. He’ll give players the Good Rod if they reply “yes” to his question.

With this second rod, players will be able to catch a wider variety of Pokémon, depending on their location. Magikarp can still be caught using the Good Rod, as can its evolved form. However, Barboach, Finneon, Goldeen, Poliwag and Feebas also become available.

Unfortunately, players will have to wait until the post-game to collect the third and final rod. After beating the Elite Four, players need to unlock the National Pokédex by registering all 150 Pokémon in the Sinnoh Dex, then speaking to Professor Oak in Sandgem Town. Next, head to the Fight Area. Once there, walk upwards, past the Route 225 signpost, to find the final Fisherman. Talking to him (and again replying “yes”) gets the player the Super Rod.

With the best rod available, players can expect to catch a wide variety of Pokémon, including the evolved forms of those available with the Good Rod. On top of those, the following can be caught:

  • Shellder
  • Dratini and Dragonair
  • Chinchou and Lantern
  • Qwilfish
  • Octillery
  • Carvanha and Sharpedo
  • Wailmer and Wailord
  • Corphish and Crawdaunt
  • Clamperl
  • Luvdisc

With this rod, players will be able to catch some strong Water-type Pokémon, padding out a significant portion of their Pokédex along the way.
