An artist on Reddit is gaining traction after posting videos of their process of painting Pokémon trading cards and transforming them into miniature works of art. Redditor bizzybxi recently posted their transformation of a Squirtle card into a small, detailed acrylic painting, the latest in their series of creative works.

Pokémon cards may only be one facet of the multibillion-dollar franchise, but they are undoubtedly one of the cornerstones of its success. Pokémon cards constitute the majority of the trading card market, with over 30 billion sold. Rare cards or unopened first-gen cards have become highly sought-after collectibles, which unfortunately also lends itself to an increase in forgeries and other online scams by sellers looking to take advantage of eager buyers with a surplus of cash. But while current-gen prints of Pokémon cards may not fetch the same hefty price tag or level of covetousness as their collectible counterparts, their commonness allows their collectors to get creative.

One of those creative collectors is Redditor bizzybxi, an acrylic painter and Pokémon card collector who draws inspiration from the card’s featured Pokémon and paints the surrounding areas to create beautiful landscapes and backgrounds that seamlessly transition into the original art on the cards. The result is a series of simple, serene, and beautifully detailed little paintings. While they aren’t as flashy or as bright as other card-based creations, they better capture the original style and feel of their source art, and as a result, better capture their spirit. Check out bizzybxi’s process below:

While bizzybxi isn’t the first artist to take this approach with their cards, that doesn’t diminish the skill and creativity that has gone into each one, which is still hugely impressive. The videos themselves that bizzybxi posts of their process don’t go into great detail about how the artist approaches each new project, but they do offer prospective artists looking to take up the hobby themselves tips, tricks, and techniques in the comments. It’s as well worth a read as the videos are worth a watch.

For anyone who wants to suggest new cards for bizzybxi to take on, the artist does currently take requests, and their resulting works are up for sale for fans who want to support a talented artist and own a beautiful little piece of Pokémon art. It’s also a great hobby to pick up, especially with the pandemic still ongoing — but fans should make sure not to use any particularly valuable or rare cards.
