Over two months have passed since the historical double Shiny Shadow Hitmontop fail in Pokémon Colosseum shook the Shiny hunting community, and now one determined hunter has become the first-ever to catch this elusive Shiny. After nearly a year of hunting and thousands of resets, the race to capture the world’s first Shiny Shadow Hitmontop has come to an exciting end.

In January of 2021, Shiny hunter 1venty79 encounter two never-before-seen Shiny Hitmontop in Pokémon Colosseum, but the way they appeared in battle made them uncatchable. Despite the heartbreaking encounters within 10 minutes of one another, 1venty79 had made history for being the first to encounter a Shiny Shadow Hitmontop. Since these historic encounters, 1venty79 has gone on to encounter over 8,000 Shadow Hitmontops while playing on four GameCubes with a single controller. They would be racing against TheUnderdog2020 and JadeParish to see who would catch the first-ever Shiny Shadow Hitmontop.

On March 20th, 2021, Jade from the Shiny hunting duo JadeParish would be the first to capture Pokémon Colosseum’s Shiny Shadow Hitmontop while streaming in Twitch. The Shiny appeared after 4,859 encounters with each encounter taking roughly 7 to 10 minutes with the occasional bad RNG making a reset take upwards of 20 minutes. The duo began hunting Shadow Hitmontop in April of 2020 and started streaming their hunt in September. Unlike other Pokémon Colosseum hunters, JadeParish opted for a single GameCube setup stating “[The hunt] seemed more rewarding than a multi-screen setup.”

Shiny hunting in Pokémon Colosseum is very different from the mainline games. Players can only catch Shadow Pokémon which belong to the bad-guy characters. While they may not appear Shiny when they are tossed into battle, players have to catch the Shadow Pokémon and then check to see if they’re Shiny. So, although 1venty79 encountered two Shiny Hitmontops in battle, when he caught them they were no longer Shiny. This is because a Pokémon in Pokémon Colosseum determines whether it is Shiny only after it has been caught. This also means that JadeParish had to battle and capture nearly 5,000 Shadow Hitmontop before the fateful Shiny appeared.

Pokémon’s 25th Anniversary has already been an impressive year with two Shiny Jirachi found on the same day, two uncatchable Shiny Hitmontop found in the same Pokémon Colosseum stream, and now the first-ever Shiny Shadow Hitmontop being caught on stream. These incredible moments wouldn’t be possible if it weren’t for the sheer determination of the hunters, and their commitment to catching these historic Pokémon makes Shiny hunting one of the most exciting facets of Pokémon games.
