Pokémon Crown Tundra Changes How Capturing Legendaries Works

Crown Tundra, the second DLC for Pokémon Sword and Pokémon Shield, is fundamentally changing how capturing legendary Pokémon works. Legendary Pokémon are some of the most powerful and sought-after creatures in the series, but catching them can be a challenge to match.

Crown Tundra is the second DLC release for Pokémon Sword and Shield on the Nintendo Switch, which originally released in November 2019. The first expansion, Isle of Armor, released earlier in the year, taking place after the completion of the main story of Shield and Sword. Players were able to explore an entire new zone with more Pokémon being added to the base game. Crown Tundra is a similar update for Shield and Sword, adding yet another zone and over 119 previous generation Pokémon to the game, this time focusing around a frozen tundra theme instead of the island theme in the Isle of Armor DLC.

Following the latest trailer for the Crown Tundra DLC, players now know how the game will be handling the addition of every single legendary Pokémon from previous titles and series into the Crown Tundra zone, including new Legendary Pokémon forms unique to the Galar region. As Serebii.net reports, Legendary Pokémon can be caught as a part of the new Dynamax Adventures mode included in Crown Tundra. Dynamax Adventures mode allows up to four players to face off against a number of Dynamaxed Pokémon in raid-like battles. Players will be able to choose between different routes to explore, with each having a different mystery Dynamax Pokémon to defeat. After defeating three Dynamax Pokémon, a Dynamax Legendary Pokémon will appear. If players are able to beat the Legendary Pokémon, they are guaranteed to successfully capture it. However, players will only be able to capture one Legendary Pokémon per Dynamax Adventure. If players wish to catch more, they will have to start over from the beginning of the mode again.

These Dynamax Adventures won’t be easy, with damage and PP usage carrying over from each fight through to the end. Along the way players may encounter characters and berries on the paths that can restore some HP or PP to their Pokémon. Teams will need to be smart about how they fight through these adventures, making sure not to lose too much health and use up their best moves before reaching the Legendary Pokémon.

Pokémon fans will have to settle for only these two DLC releases this year, with no main series title announced for 2020. Usually, The Pokémon Company strives to release a main Pokémon title each year, with only a few exceptions to this pattern. Hopefully, Crown Tundra will be enough to tide fans over for another year until a new title is announced.
