Pokémon Detail Rotom Has Teeth (And We Can’t Unsee It)

Yes, you read that correctly, Rotom has teeth.

Technically speaking, Rotom has always had teeth. The difference is, in later generations, Rotom has become a lot more… smiley, for lack of better word. Rotom’s chompers have become a lot more noticeable, so we’re all going to have to come to grips with a ghost with teeth.

Some of you might find Rotom’s teeth to be surprising. Don’t be alarmed — you’re not alone. Early art for Rotom showed an Electric/Ghost-type Pokémon that didn’t have teeth at all. It was just an upturned line to indicate that Rotom had a mouth. Even in the anime, that mouth never indicated a dentition at all and remained just a red blob. After all, why would a ghost need teeth?

Things changed when Rotom started possessing various electronic appliances. Whenever Rotom possessed a phone, stove, fridge, or Pokédex, its design showcased its mischievous nature with an open-mouthed smile. There were just two lines to indicate that Rotom had three teeth in total, but the overall effect was still basically cute. Haha, Rotom, we get it: you’re in my oven ruining my soufflé. How droll.

Just about the most teeth we ever saw of Rotom was when the Pokémon possessed a lawnmower, but that could always be explained away. As a lawnmower, Rotom was literally eating grass — of course he’d need big, pointy teeth to chomp all that greenery.

However, then things changed. In Pokémon Sword & Shield, Rotom’s facial features became much more enthusiastic. Now, not only does Rotom’s mouth open whenever he’s excitedly zipping around outdoors, but it combines elements of his mischievous smile with the anime’s red blob to create something that can never be unseen.

Why is it so disturbing? It’s the same thing as with the original Sonic The Hedgehog movie design. The moment you start to see individual teeth, the lizard part of your brain takes over and overrides the notion that this is a harmless cartoon character. Instead, it tells you this is a threat to your safety. Just look at all those chompers! This thing you tear out your gizzard!

There was an immediate positive response from the public as soon as Sonic was redesigned so that he had less teeth — and so he generally had less human-like features.

Pokémon, please. Take a page out of Sonic’s playbook and get rid of Rotom’s teeth. We’ll all thank you for it.
