Pokemon Diamond and Pearl Remakes Officially Announced for Nintendo Switch

Ever since the launch of Pokemon FireRed and LeafGreen, Nintendo has released Pokemon remakes every five years or so. It’s been nearly seven years since the launch of Pokemon Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire, so fans have been overdue for Pokemon Diamond and Pearl remakes. Now it’s been confirmed that fans can finally get their hands on the Pokemon Diamond and Pearl remakes in late 2021.
The Pokemon Diamond and Pearl remakes are entitled Pokemon Brilliant Diamond and Pokemon Shining Pearl. They will launch simultaneously worldwide in late 2021, but in a twist, they won’t be developed directly by Game Freak. Instead the games are being developed by ILCA, who developed the Pokemon Home app. Pokemon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl are being directed by Yuichi Ueda of ILCA and Junichi Masuda of Game Freak.
Like the original games, Pokemon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl are set in the Sinnoh region. The games are looking to replicate the gameplay experience of the original, retaining its sense of scale and the starter Pokemon. That means players will once again get to choose between Turtwig, Chimchar, and Piplup. And it also means that, contrary to some recent rumors, the Pokemon Diamond and Pearl remakes do not play like the Let’s Go spin-off series. On the contrary, they will play like traditional, core Pokemon games.
While that controversy may have been avoided, there’s been a mixed reaction to the Pokemon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl art style so far. The game features chibi-looking characters in the overworld, which seems to have been done to retain the general look of the Nintendo DS versions. However, the announcement of Pokemon Legends: Arceus may go a long way in keeping fans from getting too riled up about the Diamond and Pearl remakes.
Announced alongside the Pokemon Diamond and Pearl remakes was Pokemon Legends: Arceus, which looks like a large scale, open world Pokemon RPG that fans have been asking to play for years. The game will launch in early 2022 and makes a perfect companion piece to Diamond and Pearl because it’s a prequel to those games, set many years in the past and detailing how the Sinnoh region’s first Pokedex was created.
More information on Pokemon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl, along with Pokemon Legends: Arceus, should come to light in the months ahead. In the meantime, there are plenty of Pokemon Day celebrations in existing Pokemon games to keep fans busy.
