Pokemon has posted a video clip teasing the arrival of Legends: Arceus in which an explorer appears to get attacked by a Pokemon.

Pokemon has released some big games over the course of the past 12 months and still has some big ones left to launch before the end of the year and into 2022. One of those will be Pokemon Legends: Arceus which is slated to arrive on Nintendo Switch on January 28, 2022. That’s if it doesn’t get pushed into February which is already shaping up to be the busiest month in video game history following the delay of Elden Ring.

A new teaser for Legends: Arceus was posted on Twitter today, and it’s a little odd. The video is made up of mocked-up archive footage that appears to show a trainer exploring a snowy, desolate part of the Hisui region. Hisui is technically the Sinnoh region but since Arceus is set hundreds of years before Diamond and Pearl, the area is known by a different name.

The footage, which is about as close to a Blair Witch x Pokemon mashup as you’re ever going to get, was apparently discovered in the Canalave library. It shows a trainer excitedly stumbling upon a group of wild Snorunt. As they move on, the image becomes less and less clear, as does what the trainer is saying.

They appear to wander into a cave where they find a Pokemon that they struggle to identify. After confirming it is neither a Growlithe nor a Vulpix, it sounds like the Pokemon attacks and the footage ends with a lengthy and eerie silence. So begins the speculation as to what that vicious wild Pokemon might have been.

Since we’ve already seen what a Hisuian Growlithe looks like, the most logical explanation as for what was awaiting the cameraperson in that cave is a Hisuian Arcanine. It might also be an entirely new Pokemon we haven’t been introduced to yet. The teaser does also confirm despite being set in Pokemon’s past, the residents of Hisui had cameras. Makes sense as it has already been confirmed that trainers will have access to a mysteriously powered smartphone.
