Pokémon Every Main Character Ranked According To Their Win Rate

Ash Ketchum is undoubtedly the main character of Pokémon; he is in almost every episode of the anime and is the character with whom viewers spend the most time as he becomes a better and stronger trainer.

But he also travels with several other people over the course of his time training, many of whom have the same goals as him, or similarly Pokémon-focused plans for their lives. Throughout their time traveling together, the characters get into Pokémon battles, with varying results as to the outcome, leaving some of the characters with surprisingly high win rates and others with rather low rates.

10 Iris: 33%

Iris is fairly young when she is traveling with Ash and has just begun training as a Pokémon Trainer. In the course of her time in the series, she doesn’t actually face off against very many opponents. But it’s no surprise that when she does, she very rarely wins.

This isn’t necessarily because she’s a bad Trainer but because she’s very new to battling and will likely get stronger as she continues on her journey toward being a great trainer.

9 Clemont: 33%

Clemont’s win rate being so low is actually pretty surprising. As the Gym Leader of Lumiose City’s Gym, it could be reasonably expected that he would be winning at least half of his battles.

But it also makes a small amount of sense that Clemont doesn’t battle particularly well, since he actually let one of his inventions, the Clembot, handle most of the Gym battles for him. And his focus is more on inventing than on being a Trainer.

8 Dawn: 44%

Dawn is very young as well when she joins Ash in his journeys. Beyond that, she is also not a Pokémon Trainer who focuses on battles.

She’s instead more interested in working as a Pokémon Coordinator, which is more focused on training Pokémon to enter Pokémon Contests, more similar to dog shows, than in battling. But she does have her fair share of battles in the series, showing that she has some skill in training on different levels.

7 Misty: 50%

Despite being one of Ash’s longest-running traveling companions and being a Gym Leader herself, Misty doesn’t actually have all that many Pokémon battles of her own in the series.

She does face off with Ash himself on a number of occasions, with them each pulling out a win at various times. And she has won more fights than she’s lost, though a couple ended in draws or were interrupted by outside forces, leaving them without a winner.

6 May: 50%

It makes sense that there are a few people in the range of winning about half of their battles. As fairly young and talented Pokémon Trainers, companions like May are good at pulling out victories over people who are near her level but fall short against people with more experience.

Like Dawn, May’s major focus in training is for Pokémon Contests as well, which probably means her battling skills aren’t her main focus when training her Pokémon.

5 Max: 50%

Max is not an official Pokémon Trainer when he begins traveling with Ash and his older sister May, as he’s actually too young to train. However, that doesn’t stop him from battling from time to time with other aspiring Trainers his age or with slightly older Trainers who are able to give him some pointers.

He’s got a surprisingly high win rate considering that he mostly uses Pokémon that he borrows from May or Ash when participating in a battle.

4 Serena: 59%

Serena, like May and Dawn, isn’t focused on training her Pokémon for battle. Instead, Serena is a Pokémon Performer, who trains her Pokémon to compete in Pokémon Showcases. In these instances, they show off a variety of activities that they have worked on performing together.

This has not stopped her from participating in her fair share of Pokémon battles, and her win rate is actually pretty good, considering that battling is not necessarily her forte.

3 Cilan: 60%

Cilan, along with his brothers, is a Gym Leader, so it’s no surprise that he has a pretty good track record when it comes to winning battles. Ash does manage to defeat him early on, which leads to Cilan traveling with him in order to become a better Trainer.

Cilan is also a Pokémon Connoisseur, which means that he is excellent at being able to tell if a Pokémon and its Trainer are a good fit. This leads to him being an excellent Trainer and to winning battles fairly regularly.

2 Ash: 70%

It’s no surprise that Ash’s win rate is so high, considering that he’s the main character of Pokémon. Ash is most often seen battling out of all of the characters in the series since he is always participating in the episodes and various tournaments, which means that he has been notably getting better as the series goes on.

He has beaten pretty much all of his companions as well, giving him a leg up in the rankings from that perspective.

1 Brock: 71%

It might come as something of a surprise that Ash doesn’t have the best win record of all of the characters in Pokémon, but if someone was going to come in ahead of him, it makes sense that it’s Brock. Brock is a Gym Leader himself and has a lot of expertise as a Pokémon Breeder.

He acts as Ash’s coach and offers him advice on how to have more successful battles. It’s no surprise that when he does step into a battle himself, he often comes out the victor.
