Ever since her introduction in the Ruby & Sapphire series of the Pokémon anime, May’s journey from a complete novice who was scared of Pokémon to becoming a successful Coordinator and Trainer, eager to meet and make friends with new Pokémon and people, was a heart-warming character progression to watch.

May owned seven Pokémon in total, with them making further appearances upon her return to the anime in the Diamond & Pearl series. May was mostly known for her successful campaign of Contests in both Hoenn and Kanto, with each of her Pokémon bringing their own unique skills and quirks to the table, helping her to become a top Coordinator.

It was also in the Double Battle against Drew at the Kanto Grand Festival alongside Combusken, going up against Drew’s Flygon and Absol. Squirtle managed to take out Flygon before falling itself, but it allowed Combusken to face Absol 1-on-1 and ultimately emerge victorious. Upon May’s return to the anime in the Diamond & Pearl series, her Squirtle had evolved into Wartortle, with it still being a valuable member of her team.

After May caught herself a Munchlax, the prospect of her potentially having a Snorlax in the future was certainly intriguing, but Munchlax was mostly limited to comic relief with it always looking for food.

It finally started to battle and take part in Contests during the Battle Frontier and Kanto Contests arc, with it being revealed to know powerful moves such as Focus Punch, Solar Beam, and a number of unpredictable moves supplied by Metronome. It wasn’t especially successful, but it was seen defeating a Politoed and advancing May through an Appeals Round of a Contest with a clever Rest and PokéBlock combination.

5 Skitty Was Often Underestimated & Made Those Who Did Regret It

At first glance, it would be safe to assume that Skitty was just there to be an adorable member of May’s team, but it eventually grew to become an accomplished battler and Contest Pokémon, a worthy addition to May’s overall team.

Skitty helped May earn Contest victories in the Battle Rounds of both Pacifidlog and Verdanturf Contests, with it also helping in various Appeals Rounds. Skitty learned basic moves like Tackle and Double Slap, but the introduction of Assist allowed it to use moves that May’s other Pokémon used, from String Shot to the likes of Solar Beam and Ember. It also learned Blizzard, which became a devastating addition to its arsenal.

With Egg Pokémon becoming something of a staple in most series of the Pokémon anime, May’s resulting Egg Pokémon in the Ruby & Sapphire series ended up being an Eevee. Eevee won in its Contest debut by defeating Brock’s Marshtomp to win the Gardenia Town Contest, and it didn’t stop there.

Eevee made a great team with Munchlax to ensure May’s victory over Harley at the Kanto Grand Festival, and it also played its part in the Terracotta Contest Appeals Round. When May resurfaced in the Diamond & Pearl series, she arrived with a Glaceon in tow, confirming that Eevee had evolved when coming into contact with the Ice Rock near Snowpoint City. Glaceon only narrowly lost to Dawn’s Piplup in the finals of the Wallace Cup but still put in a great performance.

Bulbasaur was May’s fourth Pokémon and was quickly nurtured and educated with the help of Ash’s own Bulbasaur, with the two of them even combining to fight off Team Rocket in “Hokey Poké Balls” before Ash’s Bulbasaur had to return to Professor Oak’s Lab.

May’s Bulbasaur became an established part of her largely successful Contest campaign in the Ruby & Sapphire series, with it coming into its own at the Purika Contest, advancing through the Appeals Round before winning two Battle Rounds to win May her fourth Hoenn Ribbon. Bulbasaur made several more important contributions before eventually evolving first into Ivysaur and then into Venusaur. Venusaur made the trip with May to Sinnoh in Diamond & Pearl but was only seen helping May through one of the Battle Rounds in the Wallace Cup. Bulbasaur-turned-Venusaur was only really shown with a basic Grass-type move-set including Vine Whip, Razor Leaf, and Petal Dance.

Wurmple was May’s first wild capture towards the beginning of her Pokémon journey and quickly evolved into Beautifly via Silcoon. Beautifly became one of May’s most used Pokémon in the first half of her Pokémon Contest journey, naturally losing more Battle Rounds than it won.

This was all while May was learning and adapting, however, and Beautifly showcased its Context experience and prowess upon May’s return in Diamond & Pearl, with it knocking out the formidable Zoey and her Glameow in the Wallace Cup, in order to set up a final between May and Dawn. Beautifly showcased a varied offense with the Bug-type Silver Wind, Flying-type Aerial Ace, and Psychic, while also utilizing the healing move Morning Sun.

1 May’s Torchic Lacked Battling Experience But Combusken Helped May To Become One Of The Top Coordinators Before Evolving Into Blaziken

With Torchic being May’s first ever Pokémon, it initially had to be patient with its trainer, with May being scared of both Pokémon and the concept of failure towards the beginning of her journey. May would often opt to use Skitty and Beautifly instead of Torchic, due to its inexperience, but this all changed when it evolved into Combusken.

Combusken was a fierce fighter and won countless Battle Rounds for May over the course of several different Contests. It even showcased its versatility by making it through Appeals Rounds on occasion. It eventually evolved into Blaziken when fending off Team Rocket and fought Ash’s Sceptile to a tie in the Terracotta Town Contest. It returned with May in Diamond & Pearl, but, despite winning a Tag Battle alongside Dawn’s Piplup, it didn’t take part in the Wallace Cup. It showcased a wide spread of powerful Fire and Fighting-type moves from Sky Uppercut to Overheat and Blaze Kick.
