Pokemon remains one of the most popular and recognizable video game franchises of all time, even a full 25 years after its conception. While some players are celebrating this by playing through old games again or getting into the Pokemon Trading Card Game, others use their artistic skill to make tributes. Not long ago, Pokemon fans were treated to a fusion between Wurmple and Arceus, prompting mixed reactions from fans. While the art itself was impressive, many were put off by the idea of this so called Wurmpeus being a fusion of one of the strongest and one of the weakest Pokemon out there. On the other hand, some players absolutely loved it, and those Wurmple fans are in for a treat as the Worm Pokemon pairs up with another legendary.

Wurmple was introduced to the world of Pokemon in generation 3 with Ruby and Sapphire. This Pokemon takes the role of this generation’s Caterpie, meant to be laughably weak but with potential to grow stronger through evolution. Now Wurmple is meeting with another powerful legendary, Rayquaza, the Sky High Pokemon.

This fusion is called Wurmquaza, and Redditor comet_3 calls it the God of the Sky. This design is noticeably less off putting than the Wurmple and Arceus fusion, and that’s likely because of one major reason. Wurmpeus’ appearance was that of Arceus but with the colors and textures of Wurmple. By contrast, Wurmquaza uses the body and shape of Wurmple but replaces the colors and texturing with those of Rayquaza.

Because of this difference, Wurmquaza actually ends up looking kind of cool. The metallic green shades go well with Wurmple’s shape, and his spikes seem even more fitting than before. Others in the comments love the design, citing its cuteness as the primary reason. In the short time since it was posted, it has already acquired over 1000 upvotes on the Pokemon subreddit. Wurmple seems to be rising in popularity of late as more and more players are combining his likeness with that of powerful legendary Pokemon.

How long this Wurmple craze will last remains to be seen. Given that the Pokemon is from generation 3, it doesn’t seem likely that it’s tied to the upcoming release of Pokemon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl. Regardless of the reason, Wurmple is turning into something of a meme in the Pokemon community, but that’s great if high quality works of art like this and other Wurmple fusions come out of that meme.
