Pokemon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl have taken the Pokemon fandom by storm since their release on November 19th. Taking the much loved Diamond and Pearl games and updating them for the Nintendo Switch has created quite the buzz for one of Nintendo’s most famous series. With every hour spent with the games, players and fans are discovering more and more secrets, hidden features and extra content to do with the game.

One such feature that fans have been watching with increased interest is the Affection system, which has proven to be so strong within Pokemon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl that it can allow a players’ Pokemon to survive one-hit K.O. moves. The Affection system is a more modern take on a feature that already existed in previous Pokemon games, and it allows a players’ friendship with their Pokemon partners to influence their performance in battle.

Usually, a player will have their highest friendship with their starter Pokemon. In Pokemon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl, a player can choose between Chimchar, Piplup, and Turtwig for their companion to begin the game. Though Turtwig can often be overlooked by many Pokemon fans, there are others who claim Turtwig has been underappreciated for too long, and is actually Pokemon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl’s unsung hero.

One fan of Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl sought to share their love for their favourite combination of tree and tortoise in a Reddit post. Drawing the Pokemon in game, they tried to recreate Turtwig from memory and the results are less than perfect but hilarious at the same time. With eyes that are wider than they are long, and what appears to be a wing poking out of where the shell should be, this artist deserves an A+ for effort, but in execution there’s a bit to be desired.

Pokemon is a series that is known for fanart and fans going the extra mile to create reimaginations of what certain Pokemon could look like in different regions, and even imagining entirely new Pokemon. Turtwig has also had its fair share of art created for it, with one fan recently imagining what it would look like as an Animal Crossing villager.



Whether Turtwig truly is the unsung hero of Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl, or even the best starter, is up for debate. Pokemon games as always though, are ones of choice. What team to build, whether to catch ’em all or play a Nuzlocke run. Some players even add more challenge like Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl player that didn’t select their starter after over 120 hours logged in the game, hoping to get a shiny version.
