Pokémon fans often put in great amounts of time and effort to create their own original Fakémon, as the fandom calls them, but one fan has forced an AI to create its own.

Content creator Max Woolf released various iterations of computer-generated Fakémon to Twitter after having a bot scour over every Pokémon in existence. The tweet was so well received that Woolf later posted two further batches of 48 AI Fakémon creations.

I forced a bot to look at every Pokémon and told it to generate its own. Here are the results. (this isn’t a joke, that’s actually how I made these) pic.twitter.com/MfJUWJHZoB

Wow, you all really, really like these AI-Generated Pokémon! As a thanks for all your support, how about ANOTHER BONUS BATCH?! 😁 pic.twitter.com/kM3Kc8bBe6

Woolf explained in a follow-up tweet the type of AI used, but warned, “Unfortunately it’s not very portable/easy to use otherwise I’d set up an interactive Colab.” He also explained that the source images used were initially transparent but pasted onto white backgrounds.

Most of the Fakémon themselves bear an uncanny resemblance to the franchise’s aesthetic, with many of the creations exhibiting the right balance of being cute while maintaining animalistic qualities, as official Pokémon generally do. Some fans expressed that they found the Fakémon to be somewhat disconcerting or out of place in a way that exemplifies the shortcomings of AI generation.

Other Pokéfans were inspired by Woolf’s experiment, with some following suit in creating their own AI generations. Some have made fan art of the initially posted AI pocket monsters which make the more nightmarish creations more palatable and Pokémon-like.

Pokémon fans have had an exciting time of late with various alternate forms and new ‘mons being teased for the upcoming Pokémon Legends: Arceus. Three entirely new Pokémon will be introduced to the franchise in the forms of Wyrdeer, Basculegion and Kleavor, all of which evolve from pre-existing Pokémon. In addition, several Hiuian forms have been unveiled in the lead-up to Legends: Arceus’ release with Growlithe, Braviary, Zorua, Zoroark and most recently Voltorb. Even more Hisuian variants could be a possibility, too, with one fan theory hypothesizing an alternate form for Qwilfish. A new Canalave Library story added to Pokémon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl may suggest that the “balloon Pokémon” will receive a regional variant, too.

While fans only have to wait until Jan. 28, 2022, Pokémon Legends: Arceus’ release, they can seemingly rely on their peers to generate authentic Pokémon in creative ways in the meantime.
