Pokemon is celebrating its 25th anniversary this year, and fans have plenty of reasons to celebrate. Between the recently announced Generation 4 remakes, Pokemon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl, and the reveal of Pokemon Legends: Arceus, fans have a lot to look forward to. However, some fans are looking backward instead and sharing their favorite Pokemon designs from the Generation 5 games, Pokemon Black and White, and their sequels, Pokemon Black 2 and White 2.

The fifth Generation of Pokemon began with Pokemon Black and White’s release in 2010 and were met with positive reviews; however, the game proved to be divisive. Over time though, popular opinion of the games changed, and the Generation has become more popular.

One of the more common criticisms of Generation 5 at release was the designs of the Pokemon, with many critics calling the developer, Game Freak, lazy. This brings fans to today, as those who remember the Generation more fondly took to Twitter to post their favorite Pokemon from the Unova region and offer their thoughts and opinions. As more fans added their voices to the conversation, the topic began to trend on Twitter, increasing input. Looking through the tweets, it quickly becomes clear that every Pokemon is somebody’s favorite.

The designs of Generation 5’s Pokemon are not the only thing being discussed; others are talking about how Pokemon Black and White placed a greater emphasis on narrative than any other main series game. Fans also discussed how the game’s characters and how quickly they became fan-favorites that players are still excited to see, like when Pokemon Trainer N recently joined Pokemon Masters. As for how this discussion began, it seems to stem from a few tweets discussing Garbodor and Vanilluxe, two of the most criticized designs when the generation began.

When Pokemon Black and White came out, Game Freak and The Pokemon Company seemed to do a soft reboot of the series as, for the first time, only new Pokemon were available to the player before beating the game. This move made it harder for long-time fans to use their favorite Pokemon, which at the time upset a lot of people. After the national dex was cut entirely in Pokemon Sword and Shield and the developers had to defend themselves from the backlash, Generation 5’s decision to lock older Pokemon to the post-game in is easier to overlook.

Ironically, while Pokemon Black and White aimed to a soft reboot the franchise, many fans now consider them to be the last of the classic games before Pokemon X and Y took the series in a new direction with easier battling and less traditional JRPG mechanics. Even if the long-awaited Generation 4 remakes are now confirmed and due out later this year, some Pokemon fans are already looking forward to a Generation 5 remake, so it seems that the appreciation for Generation 5 has only just begun.

Pokemon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl are coming to Nintendo Switch in late 2021.
