Pokémon Fans Rocked by Revelation of a Previously Unknown Pocket Monster Ability

Dialogue from the recently released Pokémon Legends: Arceus has revealed a previously unknown ability that explains the origins behind the creatures’ pocket monster namesake.

The ability for Pokémon to fit inside Pokéballs is actually not a trait of the balls themselves but rather of the Pokémon, according to Professor Laventon. “Pokémon possess the odd power to shrink themselves down,” Laventon can be seen saying in a screenshot from Legends, uploaded to the r/gaming subreddit. “With the Poké Balls we craft, we can make use of that power to catch them!” Fans were reeling from the implications in the post’s comment section, with some speculating that every Pokémon should theoretically know the move Minimize, while others assume the pocket monsters need to be taught to weaponize their abilities in order to use them in battle.

Now that it’s been confirmed that Pokémon shrink themselves in order to fit inside Pokéballs, several fan theories surrounding the in-game technology might be changing as well. Fans have come up with a number of theories about what’s inside a Pokéball and what happens when a Pokémon stays inside one for too long, with some believing that, though comfortable, returning to a Pokéball is something that the pocket monsters are forced to do. Now that it’s known Pokémon shrink themselves, however, returning to the Pokéball may actually be a more voluntary process than previously assumed.

Legends: Arceus has been confirmed to take place in the distant past, and as such may imply that Pokéball technology has advanced or that modern-day Pokémon may have lost the ability to shrink themselves at will. In fact, some fans have even speculated that the game’s Hisui region is actually an alternate version of the Sinnoh region separated from the main timeline by some cataclysmic event.

Legends: Arceus was met with almost universally positive critical reception after the game released earlier this month. Though hindered by a handful of technical issues and complaints about its lackluster graphics, critics agree that Legends: Arceus still manages to innovate on the series’ established formula thanks to a greater emphasis on catching and exploration as well as new battling and traversal mechanics. The game also offers plenty of new evolutions and variants of existing pocket monsters exclusive to the Hisui region, which can be seen now due to the game’s entire Pokédex leaking online.
