Pokémon fans think they might have caught a glimpse of Ball Guy outside of Sword and Shield, and without his iconic headgear, no less.

It’s amazing to think that the mainstream series of Pokémon video games have been in our lives for 25 years. It’s even more amazing to think that even though those games have changed and evolved in major ways, the basic premise has remained the same. Travel around a region catching Pokémon, collecting badges, and battling rival trainers.

There have also been recurring characters throughout the series or characters types who have been tweaked over time. Each region has a professor who will get players going on their new journey and bestow a starter Pokémon upon them. There have also always been NPCs at each gym giving trainers tips on how to beat the leader in charge of that gym.

In Sword and Shield, that NPC is The Ball Guy. A bizarre mascot with a Pokéball for a head. As well as offering up advice, Ball Guy hands out Pokéballs to trainers. Upon his reveal to the Pokémon universe, Sword and Shield players had a lot of fun with the new character. Someone even added a mod to the games that allows players to battle against Ball Guy in a Max Raid Battle.

Trainers who did that, shame on you! It turns out Ball Guy isn’t some weird creature with a Pokéball for a head, it’s just a man in a costume. At least that’s what has been implied by the creators of anime series Pokémon: Twilight Wings. During the latest episode of the show, fans think they have spotted Ball Guy sat outside a restaurant, Pokéball helmet off and sat on the table in front of him.

It’s a very brief cameo and honestly one we can’t believe anyone picked up on. For anyone who missed it, or is yet to watch the episode, check the moment out in the screenshot above. The outfit checks out, and there does appear to be something akin to a giant Pokéball sat in front of the dining gentleman. We wonder if this will be a one-time appearance for Ball Guy out of his uniform, or if there is more to come from the mascot in Twilight Wings.
