The latest series of the Pokémon anime has officially made its way to North America on Netflix, but one of the localization changes has left fans baffled, as the Pokémon World Championships have been turned into the World Coronation Series.
In the current season of the Pokémon anime, Ash Ketchum is traveling the world as a contestant in the Pokémon World Championships, as he hopes to be the first person to defeat Leon, the reigning Champion of the Galar region. Ash now has access to a teleporter that allows him to visit every region in the series, so he can challenge the best Pokémon Trainers in the world in order to increase his ranking.
The English dub of the latest series is now available on Netflix as Pokémon Journeys: The Series. However, there has been a strange change made during the localization process that has displeased fans — the Pokémon World Championships are now called the World Coronation Series in the English version of the show.
No one is sure why the name was changed, as the term “coronation” is focusing on the aspect of someone being crowned Champion, but the Pokémon World Championship name says that a lot better. Leon himself does have a royalty theme going on, but that only applies to him and his status as the Champion of the Galar region, which is based on the United Kingdom.
The name change is bizarre. If Ash wins the Pokémon World Championships, then it suggests that he will become the World Champion or a Pokémon Master. The World Coronation Series is a more nebulous term and it doesn’t convey the nature of the event as well. Pokémon World Championships also sounds a lot more impressive on its own.
The direction of the current season of the Pokémon anime has made a lot of fans excited, as Ash is going to be taking part in an epic tournament consisting of some of the best Pokémon Trainers in the world. The name change for the tournament itself is pretty dumb, but it doesn’t detract from the awesome storyline that is about to kick off in the Pokémon world.
