As long as Pokemon has been around, fans have their top picks of Pokemon from each generation, whether for their effectiveness in a battle or their excellent design. While the number of new Pokemon continues to grow, there has also been plenty of excellent Pokemon that never got to see the light of day.

Specifically, one of the most infamous examples comes from Pokemon Gen 2 games, where fans discovered plenty of scraped and alternate design choices for various Pokemon almost two decades after the initial release. For example, from this early version of Pokemon Gold and Pokemon Silver, fans missed out on a cute round electric tiger Pokemon dubbed by many as Kotora.

Now multiple Reddit users are mourning the loss of Kotora by sharing memes and fantasizing about what could have been another great electric Pokemon line. Some are even discussing the possible ways Kotora could come back into the newer Pokemon games.

One of the ideas being thrown around is changing Kotora’s type from an electric Pokemon to a Rock Pokemon, similar to Darumaka. This inspiration coming from the mascot from the Ota Memorial Museum of Art in Japan, known as Toako Ishi in folklore, which is quite popular in Japanese culture. In more current Japanese culture portrayals, Kotora could even resemble Toraripi, a popular plush cartoon bear that is also really popular. This wouldn’t be the first Pokemon to be based on folklore or pop culture, so this could work.

The idea to change Kotora’s type is also important since many speculate that it was cut from Gen 2 because there were too many Electric-type Pokemon in the game with Pikachu, Elekid, Lanturn, and Mareep. Not only that, but there was already another legendary thunder tiger named Raikou, so the developers theoretically would not want two similar Pokemon. Some also suggest making Kotora a Normal-type Pokemon since their numbers have been lacking recently.

Many exclaim that Kotora would’ve been the perfect Gen 2 Pokemon to exist since it fit with the theme of a lot of really small and cute Pokemon. Luckily, there is a possibility that Kotora’s story isn’t over yet. Other developers and creators could copy the design and implement it into their game, like what the creators of Temtem did with the Platypet design. However, that was a fake design and not official, so there might be legal issues with Kotora. In whatever way it might be, hopefully, fans will be able to play with Kotora sometime soon and make up for the lost time.
