Pokémon Gaming Detail Oshawott Has Punny Names For Its Weapons

There are some Pokémon that wield weapons in battle, like Farfetch’d with its leek or Cubone’s bone. The Oshawott line uses shell blades in battle and their names are puns, assuming you took the time to read the Pokédex or watch the anime in order to learn them.

Oshawott was the Water-type starter Pokémon that was introduced in Pokémon Black & White. It was also a starter in Pokémon Black 2 & White 2. Oshawott is based on the sea otter, with the shell on its chest representing the food they eat. It evolves into Dewott, which carries two shells on its sides that it uses like war fans. The final evolution of the line is Samurott, which has two swords hidden within the shell bracers on its forearms.

Unlike the weapons used by some other Pokémon, the shell blades wielded by the Oshawott line actually have names, though they’re only mentioned in the Pokédex in Pokémon Black & White and Pokémon Black 2 & White 2. According to Bulbapedia, the shell blades used by Oshawott and Dewott are referred to as scalchops — a pun on saltwater clams, which are commonly called scallops.

Once Dewott evolves into Samurott, it loses the scalchops, but it gains two new swords. According to the Pokédex, the swords wielded by Samurott are called seamitars, which is referencing a type of sword called a scimitar. The Oshawott line is meant to reference samurai warriors, and the swords used by Samurott are meant to evoke the two blades used by samurai (the katana and wakizashi), but the localizers likely couldn’t resist the pun.

Oshawott had a rough start, as many fans expressed their displeasure with its design when it was first revealed, especially compared to Snivy and Tepig. Once Pokémon Black & White were released, the Oshawott line found a huge audience who wanted to make the sad little Pokémon happy (much in the same way that Mimikyu won over the crowd years later), and many people wanted to use the power of the awesome Samurott in battle. Naming swords is a tradition in fantasy franchises and the Oshawott line is deserving of its titled blades.
