In the Pokemon GO community, May has kicked off with a brand new event: the Battle Showdown. This event focuses on Fighting-type Pokemon, but it also features a variety of other features such as 2x bonus XP for Gym and Raid Battles as well as various gym-related bonuses. With the event lasting through May 14, players have plenty of time to take advantage of it, but one aspect of the event is permanent.

As with many events such as Earth Day or Community Days, Niantic has added new shiny Pokemon to the game’s roster. It fits that the new shiny Pokemon are Makuhita, Hariyama, Meditite, and Medicham, all of which are Gen 3 Fighting-types. Typically, shiny Pokemon are extremely rare in Pokemon GO, but with the ongoing Fighting-type event, it seems likelier to catch the shiny forms of these Pokemon.

For players on the lookout for these additions, Meditite will be red and pink instead of grey and blue. Its evolution, Medicham, will be blue and yellow instead of red and grey. Shiny Makuhita will have red hands and markings, with its evolution, Hariyama, having purple hands and a red/orange skirt. Check out the shiny Makuhita below:

While this is pretty exciting news, it’s not the only May addition that players have to look forward to. Today, Zapdos officially replaces Moltres as the Field Research breakthrough, and the Electric/Flying-type Legendary will likely remain for most of the month. Interestingly enough, as a Flying-type, Zapdos has a distinct advantage over the Fighting-type Pokemon in this event but that may not be intentional on Niantic’s part.

The Battle Showdown event will likely keep Pokemon GO players busy for the next two weeks, as they hunt down the aforementioned elusive shiny Pokemon or work on completing the research necessary to catch Zapdos. Looking to the future, Pokemon GO players can be expecting the level cap to be increased as well as Gen 4 Pokemon to be introduced. Until then, good luck out there, trainers!
