The latest update to Pokemon GO adds the ability to redeem promo codes from within the app, rewarding trainers with various items. However, for the time being at least, it seems that this functionality will be exclusive to the Android version of the game.
To redeem a promo code, players need to access Pokemon GO’s main menu from the map view. From there, trainers should head to the shop, enter their code into the text field at the bottom of the page, and then tap the redeem button to receive whatever items they are owed.
The official Niantic support page for promo codes in Pokemon GO states that Poke Balls, lucky eggs, lure modules, and more will be offered up in this manner. Further down the line, it wouldn’t be too surprising to see the developer offer its marketing partners the opportunity to distribute promo codes for particular Pokemon.
The ability to redeem promo codes is not available via the iOS app at present, although this may be a temporary situation. Apple’s App Store and the Google Play Store have different rules regarding this kind of content, so it may well be that Niantic has to wait a while before both versions of the game can be put on an equal footing.
However, with Pokemon GO once again surging in popularity, it would perhaps benefit both Niantic and Apple for promo codes to be made available via the iPhone version of the game. A volley of lapsed players are likely to return now that the summer is drawing near, and Apple wouldn’t want to be seen as offering an inferior version of the experience.
Niantic has long since promised a massive summer event to mark the game’s one-year anniversary. With that date fast approaching, expect to see promo codes factor into celebrations in some way.
