Niantic has announced that two previously absent Legendaries, Pokémon X and Y’s Xerneas and Yveltal, are coming to Pokémon GO soon as part of a series of Luminous Legends events. This is just the latest in a series of updates to the mobile ARG that have introduced new content and features. The most recent involved the developer bringing back Team GO Rocket to Pokémon GO after a lengthy delay in fixing an error associated with the popular mechanic, prompting Niantic to apologize and offer players free items.

While most players have praised the changes made to the game over the last 12 months to adapt it to a world under the threat of the COVID-19 pandemic, there have been some contentious issues. Over the last two weeks, players have criticized some fresh additions to Pokémon Go that have been seen as pay-to-win. The main focus of the ire are loot box-like Eggs that can be bought with real money, and Niantic has yet to comment to or otherwise react to these takedowns of the free-to-play game’s monetization model

Pokémon GO developer Niantic has revealed that it is introducing two new Pokémon into the mobile game. As part of the Luminous Legends X event that is due to start on May 4, the Legendary life Pokémon Xerneas will become available in five-star raids. The Fairy-type Pokémon made its debut in the series in the Kalos region as part of Gen VI. Spritzee, Swirlix, and Goomy will also make their Pokémon GO debut while Rainy Lure Modules are also set to arrive. The event will run until May 17, with a new event coming shortly afterward in the form of the Luminous Legends Y event. This will mark the debut of the Legendary destruction Pokémon Yveltal, and Niantic promises to release more information about the second event in the near future.

These events come shortly after the Pokémon GO Friendship Day event that took place on April 24. Available for just a few hours, it gave players the chance to complete a series of challenges and collect up to 175,000 XP. This was boosted from the original reward of 100,000 XP, although Niantic didn’t give a reason for why the event had been tweaked so close to its launch.

Although there have been some concerns from fans about the direction of Pokémon GO, the fact that the developer continues to update the game with new content and additional Pokémon is a good thing for players. As more people are able to go outside and interact with the world again as restrictions ease in many parts of the world, the ability to catch powerful Pokémon like Xerneas and Yveltal will be welcomed by players.
