So far in 2019, Niantic has been busy keeping Pokemon Go players engaged with new content, events, and important updates. The roster of Pokemon has continued to grow as well, with the latest pocket monsters known as Meltan and Melmetal (and their shiny variants), appearing more regularly than normal. Before the planned Valentine’s Day event kicks off sometime next week, players can take advantage of increased friendship level speed this weekend only.

In a recent newsletter put out by Niantic, which was then detailed by the Pokemon fan site Serebii.net, Pokemon Go has kicked off a new mini-event running through the weekend. Friendship weekend features a number of bonuses including double friendship gains, double candy from trades, and half the stardust typically required to even make a trade. It’s not likely the big, exciting announcement that was teased earlier in the week, but for Pokemon Go players, this should be a good opportunity to increase friendship rank. This is important for a few reasons including gaining damage bonuses during a raid based on the friendship level.

The mini event comes at an interesting time, as Pokemon Go currently has two other events active. The Lunar New Year celebration event brought with it a special quest that rewards players with Chimchar, adds Spoink as a special Shiny, increases the spawn rates for a few meta-relevant Pokemon, increases the odds when trading for lucky Pokemon, and features double catch and Evolve XP. Shiny Meltan is also active in the popular mobile game, giving players increased odds of catching one when using the Mystery Box once every three days instead of the normal seven days.

In addition to these three active events, Niantic made a number of big changes to the Pokemon Go experience in an update last week. The Sinnoh region update brought with it 14 new Generation 4 Pokemon including Yanmega, Gallade, and Tangrowth. Featured Pokemon in Tier 3, Tier 4, and Tier 5 Raid Battles will see an HP increase in order to offset some of the attack damage increases made to other Pokemon over the past year. Finally, the update balanced many fast and charge attacks for the PvP Trainer Battle mode while also altering move sets for some classic Pokemon who are currently being underutilized by players.

Pokemon GO is out now for iOS and Android mobile devices.
