Pokémon GO Battle League The Best Teams For Great League

Pokémon GO’s GO Battle League has officially started rolling out to players as of last week. If you’re unable to access the feature yet, don’t worry. It’s a gradual release and will eventually be available to everyone. In the meantime, Niantic is releasing the mode a bit at a time so it can iron out any wrinkles as it goes.

GO Battle League is currently in the preseason and has kicked off with the Great League. That’s more than just a name and comes with a specific set of rules and certain Pokémon trainers are allowed to use. For instance, Pokémon over 1500 CP cannot be used in PvP battles during competitive play in the Great League. For trainers who have spent the last three and a half years catching and raising the most powerful Pokémon they possibly can, that can be a little annoying.

Players need to be a little more inventive when putting together their teams. That’s where we come in. We have gathered up some handy tips and suggestions when it comes to the best Pokémon to take into battle with you in the Great League. Not only because of the CP limit placed on trainers, but also due to the fact there’s no way of knowing which Pokémon you’ll be facing until you’re staring them in the eye.

Gotta Start Big And End Strong

One of the most important parts of assembling your team will be choosing a good Lead. A Pokémon capable of kicking things off in a major way. They’ll be able to pile on the pressure but may burn a shield or two in the process. Skarmory’s resistance makes it a great pick for this spot. Plus, if coming up against a grass-type Pokémon, it may farm enough energy for two Sky Attacks. Altaria is also a terrific choice to lead a team into battle due to its potent attack and it being hard to counter.

Trainers cannot win a battle with one Pokémon alone, at least not most of the time. As well as a good Lead, be sure to include a good Closer to finish things off. A bulky Pokémon that can withstand attacks even after all of your shields have been depleted. Again, due to the 1500 CP cap, this can be a tricky problem to solve for trainers used to just picking their most powerful Pokémon. Venasaur is a terrific choice, which you could probably tell just by looking at it. Azumarill is also a top pick for this spot and can take some big hits before giving up the ghost.

So what about the Pokémon who come between the open and close of the battle? Should you find yourself against an opponent with shields that need depleting, that’s when a trainer will want to bring out their Attackers. You might think Bastiodon would be a terrific Defender, which we’ll get to in a second, but its attacking prowess is far greater. Medicham is also a top choice for one of these spots, especially since its the perfect counter for a lot of the more popular Pokémon being picked in Great League Battles.

Last but not least, as promised, the Defenders. When your opponent’s shields are depleted and you’re trying to hold onto your own, these are the Pokémon who will step up. Pokémon that soak up the damage and save your shield in the process, but can also pack a punch when called upon. If you have a Lanturn and a Registeel under 1500 CP, then they should be your chosen Defenders without a doubt.

All of the above should provide you with the perfect basis for heading into battle during GO Battle League’s Great League. It’s live now as the rollout continues and runs until February 10, 2020, at 1 pm PST. The Ultra League will then take its place, followed by the Master League. Don’t dump the knowledge you’ve learned here today though, as the Great League will return on March 9, 2020.
