Cuddly Chespin is a surprisingly competent Starter Pokemon in Generation VI. While it evolves into the bulkier Quilladin and mighty Chesnaught, the adorable Chespin remains quite a reliable Pokemon in its early levels. Given its nature as a Starter, it’s no surprise that Chespin eventually appeared in Pokemon GO for players to get.
However, just because Chespin has further evolutions doesn’t make it a useless Pokemon. In Pokemon GO, matching Chespin with the right moveset can make it quite a deadly attacker or efficient defender.
Offense: Cuddly With Deadly Attacks
Cutie pie Chespin is by no means a slacker in terms of offense. Thanks to its Grass Type nature, Chespin can dish out mean attacks to take down different kinds of Pokemon. And due to the existence of some Normal Moves, Chespin can deal neutral damage to most Pokemon Types. While it’s not Legendary, Chespin can become a reliable asset to the team to continuously deal damage quickly.
Vine Whip (Grass), Seed Bomb (Grass)
Despite its cute nature, Chespin is no pushover when it comes to offense. Its go-to moveset consists of two Grass Moves, Vine Whip for a Quick Move, and Seed Bomb for a Main Move. Being Grass Types like Chespin, they enjoy a nifty damage buff with Same-Type Attack Bonus (STAB). At its core, both moves remain powerful against Ground, Rock, and Water Types.
However, despite the common nature of Grass Types, players need to be wary of their inherent weaknesses. Grass Moves aren’t as efficient against Bug, Dragon, Fire, Flying, Grass, Poison, and Steel Types.
Vine Whip (Grass), Body Slam (Normal)
Players who want a decently-balanced offensive moveset might want to give Vine Whip and Body Slam a shot. Being a Grass Move, Vine Whip still enjoys the STAB buff to its overall damage. Unfortunately, Vine Whip also retains its inherent weaknesses to a lot of other types as well.
Thankfully, Body Slam tries to balance this out. Being a Normal Move, Body Slam is a neutral charged attack that can work against most Pokemon Types. Unfortunately, it does add Rock Type to the list of Types this moveset is weak against. Moreover, being a Normal Type, Body Slam remains ineffective against Ghost Types as well.
Vine Whip (Grass), Gyro Ball (Steel)
Chespin users who want an alternate take on a balanced offensive moveset might want to replace Body Slam with Gyro Ball. As usual, the presence of Vine Whip as a Grass Move benefits from Chespin’s STAB buff. Given their Typing, Vine Whip once again retains its natural multi-Type Weakness.
This time around, Gyro Ball being a Steel Type tries to diversify this moveset. Thanks to its Typing, Gyro Ball enhances Chespin with strengths towards Rock, Ice, and Fairy Types. Unfortunately, players need to be wary of this moveset as it does add Electric and Water Types towards Chespin’s weaknesses.
Take Down (Normal), Seed Bomb (Grass)
Chespin mains who want to try a new take on multi-Typing may see some benefits with Take Down and Seed Bomb. This time around, Take Down serves as the Quick Move whereas Seed Bomb is the charged attack. Thanks to the Normal Typing of Take Down, Chespin will enjoy a neutral performance against most Pokemon Types. It does need to stay wary of Rock and Steel Types, and especially Ghost Types due to the Type’s weakness.
Meanwhile, Seed Bomb as a charged attack can give Chespin a much-needed edge against Ground, Rock, and Water Types. However, players need to stay careful as Seed Bomb won’t perform as intended against Grass Type’s typical set of weaknesses.
Defense: Cute With Formidable Protection
Chespin might seem cute on the outside, but this cuddly appearance is by no means indicative of a weak defense. When put as a protector, Chespin can be quite formidable as a defensive Pokemon. Thanks to its defensive movesets, Chespin can take on damage from a wide variety of Pokemon while dishing out a mean counteroffensive of its own.
Take Down (Normal), Seed Bomb (Grass)
Despite Chespin’s timid nature, it’s not one to underestimate even from a defensive standpoint. Players who want a fast-paced take on defense will appreciate the Take Down-Seed Bomb combo as a moveset. At its core, Take Down might have a measly base 8 Damage on PVE and base 5 Damage on PVP. However, it still generates 10 Energy per hit, making it a quick charger.
Players can capitalize on Take Down’s fast-paced charging with Seed Bomb. With its 33 Energy cost, Seed Bomb is a frequently charged attack that Chespin can unleash against opponents. Moreover, it boasts consistent 55 Damage throughout its PVE and PVP performance. Similar to its offensive counterpart, players still need to be wary of the inherent Types that Grass is weak against. However, this combo remains a decent performer if Chespin is used defensively.
Vine Whip (Grass), Seed Bomb (Grass)
Players who want to capitalize on Chespin’s STAB buff might want to give Vine Whip and Seed Bomb a shot. This time around, Vine Whip has a rather small base 7 Damage for PVE and base 5 Damage for PVP. Moreover, its 6 Energy generation might seem too minuscule for a go-to move. However, its move duration and damage window remain extremely low, making Vine Whip one of the fastest Quick Attacks on Chespin’s disposal.
In turn, Seed Bomb can make a consistent appearance courtesy of Vine Whip’s quick window. Unlike the first defensive moveset, the Vine Whip-Seed Bomb combo can work exceptionally well when facing Ground, Rock, and Water Types. And even if Chespin is up against its Grass Type’s natural weakness, the STAB buff may try to neutralize the damage reduction.
Take Down (Normal), Gyro Ball (Steel)
Thanks to Take Down’s 10 Energy generation, it easily becomes a go-to recharger for various Main Moves. In this case, Gyro Ball boasts a decent partner courtesy of its Steel Type’s additions to Chespin’s strengths. Again, Take Down boasts base 8 Damage and base 5 Damage in PVE and PVP, respectively.
This time around, Gyro Ball is a decent performer that boasts 80 Damage regardless of the mode. Moreover, it only costs 50 Energy. Thanks to Take Down’s decent speed, Gyro Ball is something Chespin can dish out often. And given Gyro Ball’s Steel Typing, Chespin can become strong against Rock, Ice, and Fairy Types.
Take Down (Normal), Body Slam (Normal)
Despite Take Down’s middling base 8 Damage in PVE and base 5 Damage in PVP, its 10 Energy generation per use remains outstanding. Thanks to Chespin’s moveset containing mostly low-cost Main Moves, Take Down is still an ever-reliable recharge source.
As such, Body Slam remains a good partner to Take Down. Since it only costs 33 Energy, Chespin can access the move pretty quickly. Moreover, its base 50 Damage in PVE and base 60 Damage to PVP can pile up to astronomical numbers with enough frequency. Given their Normal Typings, both Moves pose decent neutral threats against most Types except for their Rock, Steel, and Ghost Type weaknesses.
Vine Whip (Grass), Gyro Ball (Steel)
Despite Vine Whip’s generally weaker nature compared to Take Down, its strength as a Grass Type lies in the benefits of Chespin’s STAB buff. As such, its base 7 Damage in PVE and base 5 Damage in PVP get a much-needed boost to neutralize its weakness. Of course, players need to stay wary of its measly 6 Energy generation and Grass Type’s natural weakness to multiple Types.
Regardless, getting Gyro Ball as a pair for a charged attack can be worth the while. Given Vine Whip’s Energy generation speed, Chespin can dish out one Gyro Ball after the next. Its consistent 80 Damage can make it a reliable defensive weapon against most foes. And its strength against uncommon Rock, Ice, and Fairy Types can transform Chespin into a formidable defender.
Vine Whip (Grass), Body Slam (Normal)
Granted, Vine Whip isn’t as efficient as a Quick Attack compared to Chespin’s other moves. Regardless, its quick 6 Energy Generation can make it a reliable charger for low-cost Main Moves. Moreover, Grass Type’s natural strength against Ground, Rock, and Water Types can make Chespin a terrifying defensive opponent.
In terms of a Main Move, Vine Whip can easily lead to frequent uses of Body Slam, courtesy of its 33 Energy cost. Thanks to the neutral nature of Body Slam, Chespin can freely use this against most enemy Types. Of course, its natural weakness against Rock, Steel, and Ghost Types are still something to stay wary of.
