Pokemon GO Best Pokemon for Holiday Cup

The big new feature for Pokemon GO this year was undoubtedly the GO Battle League, which allowed players to take part in online battles for the first time. Since the League began, there have been several different Cups and competitions for Pokemon GO players to compete in, the latest of which released yesterday.

The new Holiday Cup event has a max CP of 1500, but that’s not the only restriction that trainers need to plan around. The Cup is also limited to Normal, Grass, Electric, Ice, Flying, and Ghost-type Pokemon. While this may not seem like a big selection, dual-types are allowed provided they meet part of the restriction.

Charm and Counter

Although it’s only been a day since the Holiday Cup began, a strong meta is already beginning to establish itself. Pokemon GO fans have identified eight Pokemon that can provide the perfect balance of strength and countering.

Wigglytuff, Whimsicott, and Alolan Ninetales

Players should expect to see the Charm Move used a lot in the Holiday Cup, and the Pokemon who will utilize it best is Wigglytuff. With its Normal-type giving it an edge against Ghost Pokemon, Wiggly will do well with Ice Beam and Play Rough in addition to Charm. Whimsicott and Alolan Ninetales can also fill this role, although they don’t counter the rest of the meta quite as well.

Vigoroth and Obstagoon

Another Move that players can expect to see a lot of in the new Pokemon GO Cup is Counter. A solid Fighting Quick-Move, Counter has a good balance of damage and energy generation. When it comes to which Pokemon is best to bring Counter to the field, it’s a tie between Vigoroth and Obstagoon. Of the two Normal-types, Vigoroth’s energy advantage is perfect for a quick switch-in, while Obstagoon counters a wider range of Pokemon in the meta.

Countering the Counters

Alolan Marowak and Charizard

The star of the Holiday Cup 2020 in Pokemon GO is set to be Alolan Marowak, with its combination of Fire and Ghost-types. This gives it an edge against the Fairy-types that players are sure to run into, as well as the raw strength to counter most of the meta. The primary alternative to Alolan Marowak is Charizard. The old favorite Fire/Dragon-type is a better counter to Altaria, but will go down quickly in a unfavorable match-up.

Altaria

The final Pokemon that players can expect to see in the Holiday Cup is the Humming Pokemon, Altaria. In previous Pokemon GO events Altaria has been overshadowed by Pokemon such as Azumarill and Galarian Stunfisk. However, with neither of those qualifying for the Holiday Cup the Flying/Dragon-type is a strong match for almost anything else on the field. The only thing it needs to make sure to avoid is Fairy and Ice-type Pokemon, which will quickly take it down.

Pokemon GO is available on Android and iOS.
