The first-ever Pokémon GO Championship Series will be held in 2022, developer Niantic announces. The popular mobile game originally didn’t come with trainer battles when it first launched in 2016, but the game’s Pokémon battle scene has taken off since the classic series mechanic’s addition in 2018. Last year, Niantic introduced the Pokémon GO Battle League, which gave the title its first taste of ranked competitive gameplay and allows players to climb the ranks and earn rewards.

Pokémon GO’s current Season of Mischief also includes Season 9 of the Pokémon GO Battle League. The Season of Mischief has also begun its latest schedule of Pokémon GO events for the month of October, including new activities and raids wherein players can more frequently encounter several Ghost-types and other seasonally appropriate Pokémon.

In a new blog post, Niantic announces it will be holding the inaugural Pokémon GO Championship Series in 2022. The new competitive ladder will see participants compete in regional and international tournaments, and top-ranked trainers will earn an invitation to the 2022 Pokémon World Championships. (Notably, the 2021 Pokémon World Championships were canceled this year.) The Pokémon GO Championship Series events will have both Senior and Master age divisions, allowing those who were born in 2006 to 2009 and 2005 or earlier, respectively, to register and participate. There will be no Junior age division, however.

Pokémon GO players interested in trying their hand at joining the first Pokémon GO Championship Series will have two opportunities to register. Those who are able to achieve Legend rank in the current Pokémon GO Battle League season will be given the chance to register early, while lower-ranked trainers can register afterwards. Both groups will be able to participate in the first batch of Pokémon GO Championship Series events. As for those who miss both initial registration opportunities, another round of events will be held after the next Pokémon GO Battle League season.

The Pokémon World Championships is the premier annual competitive event for Pokémon games, including the Pokémon Trading Card Game, Pokémon video games, Pokkén Tournament DX, and now Pokémon GO. The complete schedule for the 2022 Pokémon World Championships and all of its featured events, including the Pokémon GO Championship Series, has yet to be determined. For now, the 2022 Pokémon World Championships are expected to be held over four days in London in August 2022.

Pokémon GO has undergone many significant changes since launch, so its players joining the ranks of other professional Pokémon players has been a long time coming. After the COVID-19-driven cancellation of the 2021 Pokémon World Championships, it will be interesting to see how the Pokémon GO Championship Series develops in the coming year and how organizers will be able to manage the different host countries’ situations.
